The mystery of the Cemetery Oak
Houston has bigger trees, and older ones. But for charisma, nothing beats the Cemetery Oak. It is, of course, a live oak — Houston's favorite tree — and it is, of course, a whole lotta live oak. Sixty-four feet tall; trunk wide as a Volkswagen . Like all old live oaks allowed to grow as they will, its twisty, fern-covered branches stretch farther outward than upward. The lower ones do their darnedest to brush the ground. That ground, notably, is Glenwood Cemetery, a marble-angels-and-Spanish-moss piece of the Old South, a stray piece of New Orleans hidden just off Washington Avenue, about a mile from downtown. It's a place designed for the living to mingle with the dead; a garden punctuated with gravestones. And nowhere do you feel that life-and-death connection more strongly than at the back of the cemetery, in the Forest Mound section, where among graves dating to the 1910s, the Cemetery Oak continues to thrive — a live oak that's very much alive, there among the dead. A … [Read more...] about The mystery of the Cemetery Oak

Inside the absurd groundbreaking for Sho, San Francisco’s ostentatious club-restaurant
“This was really inspired by what you would call the commoner, who was using a flame to actually keep their home warm, and turning that into a multi-purpose cooking capability,” said Sho Group CEO Joshua Sigel, dressed in a black suit, with what appeared to be a Black Magic Hublot watch ( retails for $9,400 ) and squeaky clean Alexander McQueen low-top sneakers ( retail for $590 ). He gestured around the empty husk of the building that will, if all goes according to plan, soon sell NFT memberships between $7,500 and $300,000 to join a hospitality club at a yet-to-be-constructed Japanese fine-dining restaurant in the middle of Salesforce Park, an ambitious plan my SFGATE colleague Andrew Chamings thoroughly lambasted last month as “wrong for San Francisco.” “We’re clearly dressing it up a little bit, but that’s really the inspiration,” Sigel helpfully clarified of a venture that he later referred to as “one of the more expensive restaurants built west of the Mississippi in … [Read more...] about Inside the absurd groundbreaking for Sho, San Francisco’s ostentatious club-restaurant
7 Days of Le Corbusier and Calder in Provence
Photo-Illustration: The Strategist. Photos: Delphine Del Val Everyone knows that person who spends weeks sniffing around travel blogs, going deep into Tripadvisor rabbit holes, collecting Google docs from friends of friends, and creating A Beautiful Mind– style spreadsheets to come up with the best vacations and itineraries possible. In this recurring series, we find those people who’ve done all the work for you and have them walk us through a particularly wonderful, especially well-thought-out vacation they took that you can actually steal. When Delphine Del Val’s father retired and moved from Paris to Provence, the talent agent and founder of Pool Creatives started visiting his home near Aix-en-Provence every summer, at first for one week, then two weeks, then when COVID arrived for a month at a time. “I love the climate,” she says. “It’s warm but dry — the nature is gorgeous.” Del Val last traveled to Provence from New York this spring, and flew back with her … [Read more...] about 7 Days of Le Corbusier and Calder in Provence
North Shore Memorial Day Weekend Weather Forecast
Care for your home with 0 Home & Garden If AccuWeather predictions are right, outdoor celebrations may be better earlier rather than later. Tim Moran , Patch Staff Posted Reply If you have a four-day weekend coming up for the Memorial Day holiday, congratulations. You will have two days of nice weather to go with a pair of duds. For those of us with the traditional three-day off period, two-thirds of it is likely to make it bittersweet. The weekend forecast on Chicago’s North Shore calls for sun and warmth on Friday and Saturday and clouds and rain for Sunday and Monday, just in time for when many plan their summer kickoff barbecue parties. According to the AccuWeather forecast for Northfield (a centralized location on the Shore), Friday’s high is 64, but will feel like 72 with a “brilliant sunshine.” It could get partly cloudy and cool at night with a low of 45. If you are planning … [Read more...] about North Shore Memorial Day Weekend Weather Forecast
Streamers Get Steamy as They Lust After Sex-Drenched Fare to Seduce Subscribers
Click here to read the full article. Interior designer Melanie Rose specializes in something very intimate and unique in the home renovation space: She designs sex rooms. Remember Tommy Lee’s dream of a boudoir playground in “Pam & Tommy,” and how the racy redesign led to his sex tape being stolen? That’s what Rose does for a living — well, except she doesn’t steal her clients’ personal belongings. When she’s not planning other folks’ bedrooms, Rose is in her own home writing a series of erotic novels based on that career. It was under the guise of pitching those books as a scripted series that her manager approached Adam Sher, president of ITV America. But Sher had another idea: Why not turn her life and work into a TV-MA-rated reality show?
