Media organizations across the world revealed a massive leak of millions of financial documents Sunday that outlined the elaborate steps taken by elite politicians and other wealthy individuals to shield their wealth from tax collectors. The leak, which has been dubbed the Paradise Papers, contained more than 13 million files taken mostly from a single Bermuda-based legal services company, Appleby. The files were initially leaked to the German newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung , which then shared them with around 100 different media outlets affiliated with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ). The disclosures date back as far as 70 years ago and show the murky, but mostly legal, ways in which some of the biggest names in politics and media protect their wealth through various offshore schemes. So far, the documents have revealed how millions of dollars’ from the Queen’s private estate wound up in a Cayman Islands fund, numerous offshore dealings by … [Read more...] about ‘Paradise Papers’ Reveal Inner Workings of Elite Tax Havens

‘This Is Not the NYT I Know’: Staffers Fight over Paper Forcing Out Longtime Reporter
Staff members at the New York Times are reportedly clashing after its longtime reporter Donald McNeil Jr. was forced to resign last week for using “racist language” in 2019. In posts to a private Facebook group, the Washington Free Beacon reportedly discovered Times staffers heatedly arguing about whether the ousting of McNeil, a science reporter who had been at the paper for 45 years, was justified. “What ever happened to the notion of worker solidarity … to giving a fellow worker the benefit of the doubt?” asked Steven Greenhouse, who worked as a labor reporter at the Times for more than 30 years. “Why is it that the focus in discussions like this almost always [is] on ruining the perpetrator’s life, and not those who were harmed by [his actions]?” crossword columnist Deb Amlen replied to Greenhouse. McNeil, who had emerged over the past year as a leading reporter on coronavirus for the paper, had, according to the Times , used a “racial slur” during a work trip … [Read more...] about ‘This Is Not the NYT I Know’: Staffers Fight over Paper Forcing Out Longtime Reporter

Ex-New York Times boss Jill Abramson responds to unrest at the paper
close Video Fox News Flash top headlines for February 13 Fox News Flash top headlines are here. Check out what's clicking on Foxnews.com. I have been called by many reporters about the controversial departure of reporter Donald McNeil from The New York Times. "Do I think the Times treated McNeil unfairly?" "Is there a management meltdown at the Times?" "Why are ‘woke’ reporters up in arms inside the Times?" Because I’m a journalist, I always try to respond truthfully and on-the-record, which I have done. But some of the reporters who call me are mainly looking for little "scooplets" to feed controversy, to stoke conflict, to keep the story going for another news cycle. I do have a unique perspective that I’m eager to share. I know what it feels like to be pushed out of an important job at The Times in a public manner, as was the case when I was fired as executive editor in 2014. FILE - In this April 19, 2010, file photo, Jill … [Read more...] about Ex-New York Times boss Jill Abramson responds to unrest at the paper
New York Post Receives Leak, Reveals NYT Columnist’s Scathing Article Against His Own Paper
The New York Post published a New York Times (NYT) columnist’s scathing article against his own publication after NYT would not put it up. NYT columnist Bret Stephens wrote an article that slammed the newspaper’s leadership after it flip-flopped regarding an incident with former reporter Donald McNeil. NYT executive editor Dean Baquet first pardoned McNeil after allegations that he used racist language while leading a high school trip. Soon after, the newspaper changed its tune after pressure from staffers, resulting in McNeil’s forced resignation. The newspaper’s opinion editor, Kathleen Kingsbury, confirmed that Stephens’ piece was rejected in a statement to Fox News on Thursday . She said she has “an especially high bar of running any column that could reflect badly on a colleague” and “didn’t feel that this piece rose to that level.” Stephens specified that the article was nuked by NYT publisher A.G. Sulzberger, according to the NY Post. After its failure to go up … [Read more...] about New York Post Receives Leak, Reveals NYT Columnist’s Scathing Article Against His Own Paper
