They know private jets soon will swoop into town carrying some of golf’s top talent as thousands pour into the Anoka County suburb come July for the inaugural 3M Open, Minnesota’s first regular PGA Tour stop in 50 years. Across more than 200 countries, golf enthusiasts tuning into the event will hear broadcasters say, “Here we are back in Blaine, Minnesota.” “This isn’t Minneapolis or St. Paul. This is in Blaine,” said Erik Thorvig, the city’s economic development coordinator. “We want to make sure we have our best foot forward.” It’s why crews are carpeting medians in fresh shrubs and daylilies. The Lehi resident has tasted plenty of success during his time at golf’s highest level. Along with his 2016 Puerto Rico Open win, he’s come close to tasting victory with five second-place finishes, four in official events since September 2017. Last year he rode a stretch of 11 top-10 finishes in 28 tournament starts all the way to his first U.S. Ryder Cup team. He was 67. The PGA Tour said the cause was glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. Lietzke learned he had brain cancer in 2017. Early on, his fellow golfers Bill Rogers, the 1981 British Open champion and Lietzke’s former college roommate; Jerry Pate, Lietzke’s brother-in-law; and the two-time Masters champion Ben Crenshaw accompanied Lietzke for hospital treatments. Lietzke, known for a reliable swing that almost invariably generated a big fade and rarely ended in the rough, won his tour titles from 1977 to 1994 despite keeping to a light competitive schedule.
