Rebecca Dixon is executive director of the National Employment Law Project. The opinions expressed in this commentary are her own. "Thank Black women" has become a familiar refrain from Democratic lawmakers , who are eager to pay lip service to their fiercest, most reliable voting bloc. Black women helped deliver the presidency and the Senate to the Democrats, who ran on the promise of a $15 an hour minimum wage, among other things. Now they must do what they can to deliver on that promise. Democrats tried to include a $15 minimum wage in the American Rescue Plan , but were forced to leave it out. They have another opportunity with the Raise the Wage Act , which would raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour over five years and help decrease both the racial and gender wealth gaps that Black women face. This represents a relatively easy fix to a deeply insidious problem. Congress must pass this act, and the White House must lead the way. Fox News called me a socialist whose employees would be on bread lines," Dan Price, the CEO of Seattle-based credit card processing company Gravity Payments, tweeted Tuesday. "Since then our revenue tripled, we're a Harvard Business School case study & our employees had a 10x boom in homes bought." Utah Sen. Mitt Romney and Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton introduced a plan Tuesday to increase the national minimum wage to $10 an hour over four years and adopt new measures to protect American workers. The Republican senators’ proposed legislation appears to counter Democratic efforts to raise the minimum wage to $15 by 2025. Democratic lawmakers have pushed to include the minimum wage increase in President Joe Biden’s coronavirus relief package , arguing that the $7.25 minimum wage is far too little to support working Americans and their families, but Republicans have objected, arguing that it would lead to greater unemployment and hurt small businesses. “For millions of Americans, the rising cost of living has made it harder to make ends meet, but the federal minimum wage has not been increased in more than 10 years,” Romney said in a statement . “Our legislation would raise the floor for workers without costing jobs … automatically raising it every two years to match the state … [Read more...] about Romney, Cotton Introduce Plan To Raise Minimum Wage To $10, Protect Legal Workers

In addition to providing immediate relief to the millions who have lost their jobs in the pandemic, it substantively addresses poverty, which has become all but invisible politically for at least four decades. The major component omitted was a $15 minimum wage. The White House , however, is poised shortly to reintroduce it. The results for those barely getting by will be dramatic. The fate of the poor is consigned to the vicissitudes of the politics and the market. After years of fiscal conservatism and deficit hawkishness, the Republican Party has shown signs of a shift toward a more populist, pro-worker economic platform. Some Republicans have introduced proposals aimed at increasing the minimum wage or providing cash relief that hardly resemble previous efforts to cut spending or taxes, but instead mirror increasing calls to help working-class Americans who were struggling even before the coronavirus pandemic. “There has been a strongly populist bend,” Republican Rep. Peter Meijer told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “I think we’ve seen a lot of folks who are guessing that’s the way the party is going, and are proposing options that are more based around generating broad political support than they are around pursuing a more narrow policy end.” “There’s a recognition [among Republicans] that the government already constantly intervenes in the market,” said Rachel Bovard, the senior director of policy at the Conservative … [Read more...] about Is The GOP Turning Into A Party That Supports Cash Relief And A Higher Minimum Wage?
