We are heading toward summer; flowers are blooming, birds are mating, and the sun is staying around longer in the evening. It is a time of celebration and creativity. Many senior high school classes in this area make a trip to Disneyland to celebrate their graduation into adulthood. But Disneyland is not just for the young in age. Sports champions at the close of their winning season can be heard exclaiming, “I’m going to Disneyland!” This theme park bills itself as the “Happiest Place on Earth.” We may not have a desire to go there, but we may be longing for our happy place; the place where we feel good, have wonderful relationships and every change is delightful. What’s wrong with 19th place, anyway? The reindeer won again. Finland, where it’s 37 and drizzling, is the world’s happiest place for the second year in a row. Contentment runs rife there, according to the United Nations, using a batch of measures that include “freedom to make life choices” and “social support.” It’s a drum circle of a country filled with nice people and lots of trees. Hang your head, U.S. We dropped a notch from 18 to 19, never mind a healthy economy and surviving a boob in the White House. Despite this so-so ranking, here’s betting there won’t be a rush to immigrate to Finland. There’s no Final Four, craft beer or decent Thai food. There are a lot of happiness hacks floating around right now. Some are good, and some are downright silly. Sleep is good. So is salad, and exercise. Meditation has its benefits. I like folding my clothes into tidy vertical packets, but I’m not sure it’s necessary to my happiness. Most happiness hacks are just that — fleeting. They quickly lose their shine.
