STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.-- No need to take the Ferry, Staten Island. The sounds of Broadway are coming to us this month. The cast of the enduring blockbuster "Wicked" is flying in to perform in St. George Friday, July 13. Also on the bill: The cast of 2018's Tony-winning Best Musical, "The Band's Visit." The outdoor performance takes place from noon to 1 p.m. at the Lighthouse Point Plaza across from the National Lighthouse Museum, is just one of a series spanning across all five boroughs titled "Broadway in the Boros." "This event gives people a wonderful opportunity to see remarkable talent up close," said Borough President James Oddo. STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- It's like riding a bike, only easier! JUMP Bikes, which launched the country's first dockless bike share in 2013, is bringing its innovative motorized, pedal-assist bicycles to a portion of Staten Island in late July. The bikes will be available as part of a dockless bike share pilot launched by the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) to complement the Citi Bike program in the outer boroughs. JUMP Bikes, headquartered in Dumbo, Brooklyn, with a Research & Development Lab in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, was founded in New York City in 2010 by CEO Ryan Rzepecki, former DOT planner and analyst. JUMP Bikes pedal-assist feature, provided by a 250-watt motor and internal battery, offers a motorized assist for pedaling cyclists, allowing for a smoother and less physically-taxing ride. Rentals cost $2 for a 30-minute ride, with a charge of 7 cents for each additional minute. STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Mamoun's Falafel is the latest vendor to sign onto Empire Outlets, New York City's first retail outlet center slated to open in the fall on the St. George waterfront. The popular Middle Eastern food restaurant has called Manhattan's Greenwich Village home since the '70s. Mamoun's family-owned establishment specializes in natural ingredients and imported spices and has become a staple to the Village's food scene since it opened its doors nearly 50 years ago. Bayonne commits $10K for study of aerial gondola to Staten Island: report
BAYONNE — Mayor Jimmy Davis has committed $10,000 for a feasibility study to gauge the demand for an aerial gondola project over the Kill Van Kull, according to silive.com. The project would connect Staten Island commuters to the Peninsula City’s first ward, where they would have access to the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail, and potentially a speedier commuting option. "All they’re doing now is a feasibility study," Davis said. "Mainly it’s on their part, but the way I look at it is we’re forming a partnership with the city. You’re always looking down the road to the future." The Staten Island Economic Development Corporation (SIEDC) has secured $212,000 from a number of sources for the study, according to silive.com. The study is set to begin in May and will examine factors like cost of construction, potential route expansions, station locations, ridership, and economic development benefits and opportunities, silive.com reports.
