Associated Press Published 7:55 p.m. UTC Aug 22, 2018 New York – CBS says the upcoming 12th season of “The Big Bang Theory” will be the last. It’s the most popular comedy on television. The series began about geeky physicist roommates portrayed by Jim Parsons and Johnny Galecki and expanded to include their friends, girlfriends and then wives. Other stars include Mayim Bialik and Kaley Cuoco. Parsons’ work on the show has earned him four Emmy awards and a Golden Globe. CBS also airs a prequel about his character called “Young Sheldon.” There’s also a UCLA scholarship created by and named for the series to support undergrad study in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Today's announcement that "The Big Bang Theory" will end in 2019 makes official what a lot of people in the TV business have been speculating about. The prospect of the show's future came up at the recent Television Critics Association 2018 summer press tour. Kelly Kahl, head of CBS Entertainment, told reporters that the network was in "preliminary discussions to renew the show with Warner Bros." But Kahl was overly optimistic, it turned out. "The Big Bang Theory" will begin its twelfth and final season on Sept. 24, and will end in 2019, as what the Warner Bros. Television release says is "the longest-running multi-camera comedy series in TV history." It's hardly surprising that CBS would want to keep "The Big Bang Theory" around, since the sitcom about big-brained science nerds has been a hit from the start, and ranks as TV's top-rated comedy. "The Big Bang Theory," TV's top comedy, will end its run in May 2019 at the conclusion of the upcoming season, its twelfth. The critically acclaimed CBS comedy, which focuses on a group of scientists and their friends, will finish with 279 episodes. Warner Bros. Television, Chuck Lorre Productions and CBS issued a statement Wednesday announcing the decision to end the series, which is still a top TV performer. "We are forever grateful to our fans for their support of 'The Big Bang Theory' during the past twelve seasons. We, along with the cast, writers and crew, are extremely appreciative of the show’s success and aim to deliver a final season, and series finale, that will bring 'The Big Bang Theory' to an epic creative close,” the statement said.
