Tommy Birch Des Moines Register Published 12:59 AM EST Dec 29, 2018 SAN ANTONIO — One of the most anticipated and most successful seasons in Iowa State history came to a close in heartbreaking fashion Friday night. Iowa State ended its season with a 28-26 loss to No. 13 Washington State in the Alamo Bowl. The Cyclones finished the season with an 8-5 record and fell short of what was nearly another remarkable comeback. Iowa State, which trailed 21-7, started its comeback late in the second quarter when Connor Assalley booted a 50-yard field goal. Iowa State then pulled to within 21-17 on an 8-yard rushing touchdown by David Montgomery in the third quarter. They cut the lead to one when Assalley kicked a 23-yard field goal. The Cyclones missed an opportunity to take the lead when Montgomery fumbled in the fourth quarter, giving the ball back to Washington State. The Cougars took over on the 30-yard line and needed just four plays to reach the end zone and … [Read more...] about What we learned in Iowa State’s loss in the Alamo Bowl

Randy Peterson Des Moines Register Published 12:45 AM EST Dec 29, 2018 SAN ANTONIO — I don’t know if David Montgomery and Hakeem Butler will play Iowa State football next season. But I know this: They had games for the ages during Iowa State's 28-26 loss against Washington State in the Alamo Bowl. They'’ll play in the pros. They might be in the pros at this time next season, and if they are, they polished off very outstanding college careers Friday night. And don't forget quarterback Brock Purdy, the true freshman who was mostly unflappable in going toe-to-toe with one of the nation's best quarterbacks. That 52-yard short pass and long run to and by Montgomery that brought the ball inside the 5-yard line in the fourth quarter was spectacular. It pulled the Cyclones within two points with 4 minutes to play, but his 2-point conversion pass wasn't good. Montgomery was spectacular, despite losing just the second fumble of his career … [Read more...] about Iowa State football: Was the Alamo Bowl the final college games for David Montgomery and Hakeem Butler?
December 28, 2018 By Todd Kimm Brian Peavy There is plenty to accomplish for the 24th ranked Iowa State Cyclones as they get set to play 13th ranked Washington State in the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio. A victory would mark the first back-to-back bowl wins in program history and the 17 victories would also cap off the best two year run ever. Major progress for a program that was 2-10 four years ago and winless in the Big 12. “The Iowa State fans have been there through the ups and downs and it is big for the program to see the fruits of our labor”, said senior corner Brian Peavy. “It is perfect how coach Campbell came in with trust the process and you can see it in our journey.” Washington State enter with the nation’s top passing attack. The Cyclone offense will try to do its part by keeping the Cougar offense on the sideline. “We are going to continue to do what we try to do in every game and that is make plays”, said Iowa State running back … [Read more...] about Iowa State collides with Washington State in the Alamo Bowl
Randy Peterson Des Moines Register Published 7:16 PM EST Dec 24, 2018 SAN ANTONIO — Matt Campbell said something that caught my attention after Iowa State’s first Alamo Bowl practice Monday morning, when someone asked about the recent re-wording of his contract — in particular, the part that guaranteed his staff an additional $1 million before the end of the calendar year. “In our profession, everybody wants to look at the head coach and say success is happening because of that person,” Campbell said. “That’s really not right in college football — (there’s also) 120 players and the coaching staff. “I’ve been fortunate to have great assistants. To me, that’s way more important than what I’m given. It’s what we can give them.” Campbell isn’t insinuating that he will veto all future raises. He’ll make $3.5 million for the work he’s done this year. His contract expires in … [Read more...] about From the Alamo Bowl: Matt Campbell’s assistant coaches are just as important as the head coach
December 19, 2018 By Todd Kimm Matt Campbell Iowa State has climbed the ladder in the Big 12 Conference on the strength of a defense that ranks as the league’s best. That unit will be tested in the December 28 Alamo Bowl by Washington State’s “air raid” offense that ranks at the top of the PAC 12 in passing and total offense. “You go back to what coach Mike Leach has done in terms of shaping and changing the game of football in terms of the passing attack”, said Iowa State coach Matt Campbell. “They have been able to build a tremendous foundation.” Washington State coach Mike Leach says the Cyclone defense will provide a difficult challenge. “Coach Campbell does a great job on defense”, said Leach. “The biggest thing is they just keep playing extremely hard.” The Cougars average more than 38 points and nearly 380- yards of passing per game.
