Emergency funding for schools included in President Joe Biden’s coronavirus relief package, intended to help schools immediately return to in-person classes, won’t be fully spent until 2028. Just $38.6 billion of the $128.6 billion allocated for emergency school funding in Biden’s nearly $2 trillion coronavirus relief package will be spent by the end of 2022, according to the Congressional Budget Office. “The President’s plan would make sure we have every resource we need to defeat this virus and get life back to normal, including $130 billion to help ensure our kids can go back to school safely,” White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said recently. Biden administration withdraws from Connecticut transgender athlete case
The Biden administration has moved to withdraw federal support for a lawsuit against the state of Connecticut seeking to prohibit it from letting transgender athletes compete in girls' sports at the high school level, the Associated Press reported Wednesday. The Justice Department's withdrawal came ahead of a Friday hearing in the case over the state's motion to dismiss the lawsuit. The families of three high school girls sued Connecticut officials in 2020 , arguing that allowing transgender athletes to compete in girls' sports forced athletes "to compete against boys." “Forcing them to compete against boys isn’t fair, shatters their dreams, and destroys their athletic opportunities,” an attorney for the plaintiffs, Christiana Holcomb, said last year. “Having separate boys’ and girls’ sports has always been based on biological differences, not what people believe about their gender, because those differences matter for fair competition." Police launch early morning sweep of homeless camp near Capitol
With little warning and contrary to federal health guidelines, Colorado State Patrol troopers, Denver police and other city workers swept a large homeless encampment Wednesday morning out of Lincoln Park, just west of the State Capitol. Last week, Gov. Jared Polis said he would welcome the camp’s removal, but Denver health officials said Wednesday the decision to uproot the camp was theirs and that the sweep had been in the works for weeks. The sweep also comes less than a week after Denver Public Safety Director Murphy Robinson gave troopers from the Colorado State Patrol authority to enforce municipal ordinances — including the urban camping ban — on state property in Denver. There was just a conflict between a small group of about 10 people and police, I am not sure if they live here or came from outside to protest. One man was handcuffed after he climbed on a garbage truck apparently in protest of the removal. pic.twitter.com/1PYUuGy0ni — Shelly Bradbury … [Read more...] about Police launch early morning sweep of homeless camp near Capitol
Exclusive: After 2020 Gains, Kevin McCarthy Eyes House GOP Majority, Speaker’s Gavel in Midterms
House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy has a fresh spring in his step after the Republicans defied the odds and professional political prognosticators by picking up 15 seats in the 2020 congressional elections. McCarthy, who has his eyes on the majority in November 2022, approached the 2020 congressional elections differently than Republicans in recent history have traditionally targeted congressional electoral efforts, and his moves paid off—and not only infuriated but befuddled the beltway pundit class. For the first time since 1994, in 2020 no GOP incumbent running for reelection lost. Meanwhile, McCarthy blew away fundraising records previously set by former House Speaker Paul Ryan—astonishing since he did it from the minority. Usually, House political leaders do better raising money from the majority. That’s not to mention the most significant development which is a freshman class entering Congress in 2021 that represents perhaps the most diverse in party history with the most … [Read more...] about Exclusive: After 2020 Gains, Kevin McCarthy Eyes House GOP Majority, Speaker’s Gavel in Midterms
Democrats Must Stop the IRS From Eating the Unemployed’s Stimulus Checks
Chuck around and find out. Photo: Brandon Bell/The New York Times/Bloomberg via Getty Images If Biden doesn’t forgive the taxes on millions of Americans’ unemployment benefits, they might not forgive him for their giant surprise bills. For decades, Democrats have lived in terror of the American public’s (reputed) allergy to taxation. In 2016, the party’s presidential nominee was so afraid of antagonizing her nation’s IRS-averse electorate, she promised not to raise taxes on anyone earning less than $250,000 a year — a pledge that spared all but the top 2 percent of individual earners from the specter of slightly higher tax rates. Four years later, the Democratic standard-bearer decided that Hillary Clinton’s mercy was insufficiently broad, and vowed to exempt “middle class” Americans at the bottom of the top 1 percent from any and all tax hikes (despite the fact that Donald Trump had lowered rates in the interim). Meanwhile, like pizza chefs condemned to cook pies … [Read more...] about Democrats Must Stop the IRS From Eating the Unemployed’s Stimulus Checks
