If “Tell Me a Story” was a children’s bedtime tale, your kid would conk out in record time. This new 10-episode ensemble series, premiering Wednesday (Oct. 31) on CBS All Access, posits itself as a retelling of legendary fairy tales with a modern-day, psychological-thriller twist. But the first two episodes are so convoluted, long-winded and expository that the dramatic payoffs, when they finally do arrive, seem anti-climactic. And it’s from Kevin Williamson, creator of “Scream,” “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” “Dawson’s Creek” and “The Vampire Diaries” (among others), so it’s mainly an excuse to see many attractive young people in various stages of undress and sexually suggestive situations (including a few bare bottoms and a hot-tub scene straight out of “The Bachelor”). Save for co-star Kim Cattrall, there’s a glaring lack of anyone over the age of 40. The setup here interweaves … [Read more...] about How new series ‘Tell Me a Story’ twists its fairy tale theme

Please, tell me about you.” That’s what I would say to my father if I could sit with him at his kitchen table one more time.I spent so many hours across a table from him, every day of my childhood, hundreds of days as an adult. We talked. But we never talked about his past. “Why should I?” he would say. “It’s over. Buried. Gone.” Once, when I begged, he told me two things: that he remembered climbing onto a horse drawn wagon when he was small and sitting next to his father, who delivered gelatin; and he remembered when his father left him. He was 5 and his brothers were 6 and 1, and they would lie together in bed and listen to their father playing the piano in the barroom across the street. Advertisement Why did your father leave, Dad? Courtney Crowder Des Moines Register Published 7:28 p.m. UTC Jun 15, 2018 When I was a cub reporter for the Chicago Tribune’s Books section, I found myself sitting in a hipster café across from a visiting Brazilian author. Our interview about his entry into a noted literary magazine was winding down when I asked: “What do you want my readers to know about Brazil?” (You have to imagine the question being posed with a “Dora the Explorer” level of pep for the full effect.) He blinked, looking back at me with what can only be described as extreme pity. It’s a face I now understand to be sadness for a girl who had obviously not learned geography. “I don’t know,” he said as I shrank into my seat. “Brazil is very big, you know, almost as big as the United States. What do you want me to know about America?” I flashed back to that moment as I thought about becoming Iowa Columnist this week. If there was a cub reporter … [Read more...] about New Iowa Columnist Courtney Crowder wants to hear your stories. (No, seriously, send her your story ideas.)
