Google Senses That It’s Time to Grow Up
Google Inc.'s brief history, from its inception in 1998 by two Stanford University students to becoming one of the Internet's leading search engines, is posted on a wall at the firm's Mountain View headquarters. The posting shows the company's popularity growth to nearly 40 million queries a day, in typical Google fashion: The history is written in green, purple and red crayons, with exclamation points punctuating the biggest successes. So goes business at Google, a company trying to emerge from adolescence into maturity. It has quickly become a major force in the Internet industry, underscored by its agreement in June to provide its search engine to Yahoo Inc., the giant Santa Clara Web portal. More Work from Home In Virginia And D.C. Area, Plus U.S.
By Kelly Booth and Adam Hamza, Capital News Service RICHMOND, VA — More Americans are working from home, and that's especially true in Virginia and in the Washington, D.C., metro area, according to new data from the U.S. Census Bureau. Nationally, the proportion of workers who work from home rose from 4.3 percent in 2010 to 5.3 percent last year, the data show. Virginia is slightly above the national average, with 5.6 percent of the state's workforce — more than 236,000 residents — working from home in 2018. The figure was 6.1 percent in the D.C. metro area, which includes parts of Virginia, Maryland and West Virginia. That was the highest proportion of people working from home among the five U.S. metro areas with the most workers. In contrast, the proportion of workers who worked from home last year was 5.9 percent in the Los Angeles metro area, 5.8 percent in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, 5.4 percent in the Chicago area and 4.7 percent in the New York area.
