Bold goals to address climate change are emerging globally, and the U.S. will undoubtedly announce its own shortly. Many target clean electricity due to strong momentum and potential for immediate and long-term success, including decarbonizing other high-emitting sectors like transportation. The technical pathways to meet net-zero emissions goals demonstrate an accelerating role for renewable energy, thanks to tremendous recent cost declines. The future for clean electricity systems thus seems assured — almost. A key challenge remains in siting and building the massive amount of infrastructure needed to transport electricity to meet demand where and when it is needed . While regulatory and social barriers are widely acknowledged, solutions are few and far between, even as significant funding may soon become available through Congress’s pending “kitchen sink” infrastructure bill. To achieve 100 percent clean electricity , we need swift action to deploy distributed energy … [Read more...] about Biden can decarbonize electricity with these quick wins

A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advisory panel is coming under increased criticism for continuing a pause on the use of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine that is keeping doses on the shelf while the pandemic rages. Many experts backed the initial pause, announced on Tuesday, when it appeared that it would only last for a few days and would give time to alert health care providers to treatment guidelines around extremely rare cases of blood clots in people receiving the J&J vaccine. But the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) decided to put off making a recommendation during a Wednesday meeting in order to gather more data, in practice keeping the pause in effect until the panel meets again in seven to 10 days and raising alarms among experts about a more substantial delay. ADVERTISEMENT “I think the initial pause was the right step but I was really disappointed by ACIP yesterday,” said Leana Wen, a public health professor at … [Read more...] about Johnson & Johnson delay prompts criticism for CDC panel

College has become a staple of national news and a source of serious bipartisan concern about equity. For example, the Washington Post ran an op-ed last week that illuminated the inequitable share of college debt burdening Black students . The New York Post published a feature on Saturday about the $1.8 million salary of the president of Long Island University. To cap off the unmasking of inequities within academia, the New York Post reported on Sunday that the cash-strapped City University of New York system hired the “powerhouse” consulting firm McKinsey & Co. for $3 million for two months of work to come up with a fall reopening plan. Democratic New York state Sen. John Liu from Queens, New York City’s most middle-class borough, asked: “High-priced consultants on a plan for which there are already enough highly paid CUNY officials, while students continue to suffer from a shortage of full-time professional faculty?” This is about equity, pure and simple. What makes … [Read more...] about How can colleges recover their civic souls?
