Supporters of Hotel Rwanda Figure Denounce ‘Show Trial’
WASHINGTON - Family and supporters of Paul Rusesabagina, an activist depicted in the Oscar-nominated film Hotel Rwanda , are decrying as a sham his terrorism trial that began this week. He was one of 20 defendants appearing before a judge in a courtroom outside Kigali. “These are defendants who are on trial for their lives and possibly life imprisonment,” said Brian Endless, a professor at Loyola University-Chicago’s Political Science Department who has worked with Rusesabagina's foundation. “Most importantly, there were no lawyers next to them to assist in their defense. Their lawyers were kept in the back of the room. And just the physical dynamics of that were, kind of, incredible to see.” Rusesabagina gained international recognition for saving hundreds of people by providing shelter in the Hotel des Mille Collines, which he managed. That list blocks companies from selling American products and technology to certain foreign firms without first getting a license.” Carlson went on to explain that … [Read more...] about Tucker Carlson Calls Out AT&T For Lobbying To Protect Chinese Corporation Accused Of Supporting Human Rights Abuses
House passes bill to prevent violence in health care workplaces
The House passed legislation Friday that would require employers in the health care and social services industries to develop workplace violence prevention plans. Lawmakers passed the bill 254-166, with 38 Republicans voting with all Democrats in support. Studies show that workers such as nurses, physicians, social workers and emergency responders face a higher risk of on-the-job violence. The Bureau of Labor Statistics found in 2018 that the health care and social services industries are five times as likely to suffer workplace violence injuries. Health care workers specifically made up 73 percent of all nonfatal workplace injuries and illness due to violence that year. ADVERTISEMENT Settings such as hospitals create high levels of stress for patients and their families and friends, which can lead to agitation and sometimes violence. Health care and social service workers also at times come into contact with people who are mentally ill and may be prone to violence. … [Read more...] about House passes bill to prevent violence in health care workplaces
