BEREA, Ohio (AP) -- The Cleveland Browns believe all Baker Mayfield has in common with Johnny Manziel are height and a Heisman. After months of dissection and debate, the Browns selected Mayfield, Oklahoma's cocky and charismatic quarterback with the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft on Thursday, a somewhat surprising selection by a team that figured to play it safe with such an important decision. But coming off a 0-16 season, the Browns are betting that Mayfield is a better player than USC's Sam Darnold, Wyoming's Josh Allen or UCLA's Josh Rosen, a talented group regarded as the top QB class in years. Mayfield may have been college football's top player last season, when he passed for 4,627 yards, 43 touchdowns and won the Heisman Trophy. But the 23-year-old is undersized (he's just over 6-foot), and there are questions about his character following a 2017 arrest and some on-field antics which included him grabbing his crotch in a game at Kansas. Those antics have led to … [Read more...] about NFL Draft 2018: Cleveland Browns select quarterback Baker Mayfield with first pick

Cleveland Browns Draft Scribbles: Considering some rumors — Terry Pluto (video)
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Scribbles in my Cleveland Browns draft morning notebook: 1. Are the Browns still trying to decide between Josh Allen and Baker Mayfield? I guess it depends on what you mean by "deciding." It's no secret Browns draft consultant Scot McCloughan really likes Mayfield. 2. I had one executive who should know tell me McCloughan's words do mean a lot to John Dorsey and his front office. So there's no doubt Mayfield has been discussed -- a lot. Dorsey also made some positive comments about Mayfield over the last six months. 3. Then there's Josh Allen. He is the opposite of the 6-foot Mayfield. The 6-5 Allen played in a pro system, Mayfield did not. Mayfield is an accurate passer loved by the analytics department. Allen is not accurate. Analytics hates Allen. 4. Can there be some people in the draft room who like Allen, just as there are those who like Mayfield? Of course. But they are so different -- it's hard to imagine bringing those two camps together. 5. My guess is the … [Read more...] about Cleveland Browns Draft Scribbles: Considering some rumors — Terry Pluto (video)
2018 NFL Mock Draft: All nine picks for Cleveland Browns
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Initially armed with 12 picks in the 2018 NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns' active off-season has left them with nine, including two in the first round that will allow them to add to this young, talented foundation that former executive Sashi Brown put in place. Tyrod Taylor and Jarvis Landry were, no doubt, important additions. But Cleveland will miss that top-of-the-third-round selection and will have to wait a long time in between picks in the middle rounds, an area where general manager John Dorsey has found some gems in the past. Still, the Browns are positioned well. In a quarterback-rich class, they have their pick. They will also get a shot at an elite prospect -- or perhaps trade down from No. 4 with a QB-starved team to get a large haul -- at the fourth spot. Having two picks early in Round Two allows the Browns to jumpstart Day 2. The draft conversation that started earlier than usual because of the tough -- but necessary -- winless season has led us here. … [Read more...] about 2018 NFL Mock Draft: All nine picks for Cleveland Browns
Cleveland Browns Draft: Feeling confident about John Dorsey — Terry Pluto (photos)
BEREA, Ohio -- At his Thursday news conference, John Dorsey did a good job of saying nothing in a mildly interesting way about the 2018 NFL Draft. That probably was the goal of the Cleveland Browns new general manager. What about Sam Darnold losing nine fumbles in 2017 -- the most in Division I football? I asked Dorsey about that, and what about fixing it. Is it hard to do so? "I don't think it is," he said. Then he talked about a quarterback needing to be a very accurate passer and throw the ball "through tight windows in the red zone." Doesn't quite sound like USC's Darnold. But it sure fits the description of Oklahoma's Baker Mayfield. How about playing in the AFC North, where weather can be awful. He talked about a quarterback having good size and large hands. That's important to hanging onto the ball in cold, wet weather. That could be Wyoming's Josh Allen. It's cold in Laramie. And Allen's hands were measured at 10 1/8 inches, the largest of any quarterback at the NFL Combine. … [Read more...] about Cleveland Browns Draft: Feeling confident about John Dorsey — Terry Pluto (photos)
Cleveland Browns predraft depth chart: Recapping the current starters at each position
