Mette Harrison, a novelist who also works in the financial industry, was blindsided in 2020 when her husband of 30 years asked for a divorce. A mother of six, she estimated that she also lost half of her friends between those who ghosted her and others who expressed judgment about the breakup. According to a 2013 longitudinal study headed by Brown University scholar Rose McDermott , if people in your close social network divorce, the risk of your marriage ending greatly increases. This may partially explain why those in marriage meltdowns find themselves abandoned by their nearest and dearest. But loved ones disappearing may also be because they just don’t know how to help. On top of the loss of her marriage, losing friends was nearly too much, said Ms. Harrison, now 51. But when those who stuck by her offered help, she was also flummoxed. “I didn’t know what I needed even when people asked,” she said. One friend offered a bed until Ms. Harrison could find an apartment; another … [Read more...] about Divorce is Hard. Here’s How You Can Help Those Going Through One.

WASHINGTON — As a small coterie of grim-faced advisers shuffled into the Oval Office on the evening of Oct. 15, President Obama’s chief domestic accomplishment was falling apart 24 miles away, at a bustling high-tech data center in suburban Virginia. HealthCare.gov, the $630 million online insurance marketplace, was a disaster after it went live on Oct. 1, with a roster of engineering repairs that would eventually swell to more than 600 items. The private contractors who built it were pointing fingers at one another. And inside the White House, after initially saying too much traffic was to blame, Mr. Obama’s closest confidants had few good answers. The political dangers were clear to everyone in the room: Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr.; Kathleen Sebelius , the health secretary; Marilyn Tavenner, the Medicare chief; Denis McDonough, the chief of staff; Todd Park , the chief technology officer; and others. For 90 excruciating minutes, a furious and frustrated president … [Read more...] about Inside the Race to Rescue a Health Care Site, and Obama
TEMECULA, Calif. — Legal sports betting in the United States accelerated in 2021 as a flurry of states either overcame legislative logjams, as Ohio did just before Christmas, or signed off on online wagering, as New York did just after Election Day. But those efforts are likely to pale in comparison to the all-out lobbying, campaigning and legal jousting in 2022 involving what a DraftKings executive recently called “one of the holy grails” in sports betting: California. By November, Californians may be asked to vote on as many as four sports betting initiatives. That’s why deep-pocketed interests, including national sports books and Native American casinos, have been gearing up to spend $200 million to persuade voters in California to support their particular proposal — or to reject the others. One measure that has already qualified for the state ballot, sponsored by powerful tribes in California, would add sports wagering, but only in person, at tribal casinos or horse racing … [Read more...] about Sports Betting’s Next Big Election Battles Are in California

I recently broke up with someone I had been seeing for several months — not a long relationship, but a very intense one. In our breakup I realized that there was a lot about him I did not know, and I no longer trust him the way I once did. Is there an ethical way to ask him to delete nude pictures he may have on his phone? Part of me feels that if they are received, they are yours to keep, but I no longer feel comfortable with his holding them. Any suggestions on how to navigate this without retaliation? H.Y. His to keep? Yes and no. When he received these pictures from you, you gave him some property rights in them and not others. In particular, you weren’t granting him permission to share them with anyone else. You retained a reasonable expectation of privacy. It’s natural to say that you “shared” the pictures with him, and that verb is quite apt, because when you pressed Send, you were not fully relinquishing your ownership. You’re free, of course, to ask him to delete these … [Read more...] about Can I Ask My Ex to Delete Those Nude Pics?
