Updated 12:00 PM ET, Fri March 2, 2018 (CNN)After the #OscarsSoWhite outcry, we're seeing glimmers of hope in Hollywood -- with black actors, writers and directors nominated in multiple categories this year. But when it comes to Hispanic-Americans and Asian-Americans, the Academy Awards still have a long way to go to flip the script. Take a look at this chart. It's a look at 90 years of Academy Award winners in the major categories. While representation takes many forms, for ease of comparison we looked at US Census data and compared that with representation in Hollywood films. And what you see is that even as African-Americans have fared better in recent years, Hispanic-Americans and Asian-Americans are woefully underrepresented. Only 5 Hispanic-Americans have won (Anthony Quinn won twice) Only 2 Asian-Americans have won (The chart doesn't include Javier Bardem, who received an Oscar for best supporting actor, and Penelope Cruz, who received an Oscar for best supporting … [Read more...] about News flash! NBA Grammys: Taking a look at 6 of the NBA’s best rappers
Basketball players have time and time again tried their hands at rap music. Drake said it best when he rapped, "I swear sports and music are so synonymous/'Cause we wanna be them and they wanna be us." Lonzo Ball is the latest player to get into the rap game, but he is certainly not the first. With the Grammys tonight, it's only fitting we take a look at some of the best rappers the NBA has produced. WARNING: Some of these songs contain NSFW language Lakers play Lonzo Ball’s rap song on team plane Shaquille O'Neal Without a doubt the most successful name on this list, Shaq was able to simultaneously dominate on the court and in the recording studio, with his first album Shaq Diesel released in 1993 receiving a platinum certification and his follow-up Shaq Fu: Da Return receiving gold. Damian Lillard Lillard, aka Dame D.O.L.L.A., initially got into the rap game as harmless fun, starting a trend #4barFriday in 2015 where he and others who chose to participate post a video … [Read more...] about NBA Grammys: Taking a look at 6 of the NBA’s best rappers
Check your home value compared to one year ago. Take a look at your 401(k) or IRA.
President Donald Trump. (AP Photo/Evan Vucci) Check your home value compared to one year ago. Thousands of new homes and apartments are under construction and creating thousands of new jobs. Take a look at your 401(k) or IRA. Companies are giving employees a share of the good fortune. The economy has never been this good, yet the left spends 24 hours a day trying to impeach Donald Trump. Has anyone thought about what happens if Mr. Trump goes down? First, the market would crash and your home value and investments would wither. This would cost tens of thousands of jobs. Your net worth has tanked, but they got Mr. Trump and that is more important. The Dems are just looking out for you. They know what’s best for you. … [Read more...] about Check your home value compared to one year ago. Take a look at your 401(k) or IRA.
As you travel, pause and take a look at airport chapels
Wendy Cadge, Brandeis University Published 4:00 am, Wednesday, January 3, 2018 (The Conversation is an independent and nonprofit source of news, analysis and commentary from academic experts.) Wendy Cadge, Brandeis University (THE CONVERSATION) Traveling in the new year? It is very likely there is a chapel or meditation room tucked away somewhere in one of the airports you’ll pass through. Sixteen of the country’s 20 largest airports have chapels, as do many more around the world. I am a sociologist of contemporary American religion and have written two recent articles about airport chaplains and chapels. My interest in airport chapels started as simple curiosity – why do airports have chapels and who uses them? After visiting a few – including the chapel at Logan, my home airport here in Boston – I have concluded that they reflect broader changing norms around American religion. The country’s first airport chapels were intended for … [Read more...] about As you travel, pause and take a look at airport chapels
Take a look at preliminary designs for the proposed Pinney Library
During the community engagement process for the proposed relocation of the Pinney Library, attendees were clear: they wanted everyone to feel welcome in the new space. The architects want to accommodate that request, and preliminary designs show an attempt to invite the public in with natural light and materials. The new Pinney Library will double the space of the current branch at 204 Cottage Grove Road, the third-busiest among Madison Public Library branches. The space is meant to be warm, welcoming and promote play and early literacy to address the achievement gap. The new branch will be housed in the larger Royster Commons development at 516 Cottage Grove Road, at the intersection with Dempsey Road. The development will also include 16,000 square feet of commercial space and 86 apartments. Ruedebusch Development & Construction is the developer of the Royster Commons project and OPN Architects is designing the library. OPN Architects is the designer behind the … [Read more...] about Take a look at preliminary designs for the proposed Pinney Library

Ben McAdoo says Giants will ‘take a look’ at Adrian Peterson
INDIANAPOLIS – Adrian Peterson to the Giants? Ben McAdoo and Big Blue will “take a look.” That’s the most the head coach would say Wednesday at the NFL Scouting Combine when asked if the Giants share the same interest in Peterson that the pending free agent running back has shown publicly in them. “You know what? We’ll go take a look at him, we’ll evaluate him, we’ll get a grade on anyone who’s available, and we’ll make those decisions in terms of what’s best for the Giants moving forward,” McAdoo said. McAdoo’s answer revealed little of the team’s intentions. He wasn’t about to slam the door shut eight days prior to the March 9 opening of free agency. Plus, that ultimately is a question for GM Jerry Reese, who is not addressing the media this week at all. Peter King of MMQB.com did write on Wednesday morning that he “hear(s) the Giants are interested” in … [Read more...] about Ben McAdoo says Giants will ‘take a look’ at Adrian Peterson
Take a look at this different approach to cataract surgery
One New York City ophthalmologist set his sights 20 years ago on another way to treat cataracts. August is National Cataract Awareness Month, so now’s a good time to look at what’s still considered an alternative surgical procedure. Dr. Scott Greenbaum, an assistant clinical professor in the department of ophthalmology at New York University, developed the method for treating cataracts — the clouding of the eyes' lenses — that eliminates the need for glasses in 90% of patients. It's performed on people in their 40s and 50s who are just beginning to develop vision problems. Not everyone gets cataracts, but by age 80 about half of the population will have them so severely that they will require surgery. "When they affect the vision in a way that impairs the ability to perform daily function, that's when we discuss surgery," Greenbaum told the Daily News. The traditional method for treating cataracts involves … [Read more...] about Take a look at this different approach to cataract surgery
Daily News takes a look at scheduling snafus and double-booking blunders
There's nothing more embarrassing to a sports franchise than double-booking an arena. Just ask the Nuggets. A scheduling fiasco this week between Kroenke Sports (which owns the Nuggets and Denver's Pepsi Center) and World Wrestling Entertainment prompted WWE frontman Vince McMahon to suggest a steel cage match to decide the conflict - and it left fans across the country ripping Nuggets owner Stan Kroenke for not having enough faith in his team to make sure his arena was available for playoff games. But don't be so quick to blame Kroenke, says Wayne McDonnell, professor of Sports Management at New York University and a former financial analyst for Madison Square Garden. "All you have to do is look at the players (Kroenke) acquired and the team he assembled," McDonnell said of Chauncey Billups, Carmelo Anthony and company. In other words, this is about economics - not faith. Underutilizing a facility is throwing money down the drain - MSG looks to book events up to 275 nights … [Read more...] about Daily News takes a look at scheduling snafus and double-booking blunders
