DAVENPORT -- Donors who register to give blood on select dates will get a voucher for a retro-themed T-shirt from Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center. The center needs more whole blood and platelet donations before Memorial Day to help ensure an adequate blood supply for local hospitals. In late April and early May, the rate of blood donation decreases as the school year and high school and college blood drives end. Director of donor relations Amanda Hess said it’s especially important to get more donors the week before a big summer holiday. “We’ll see donor presentation decrease in the weeks ahead, but the rate of blood utilization will remain the same,” she said.Donations of all blood types are needed, but there is a special need for type O-negative whole blood donors, type AB plasma donors and platelet donors. “Platelets must be transfused within five days of donation, so we will also keep a close eye on those schedules to make sure our … [Read more...] about The need is great: Give blood May 14=June 3; get a T-shirt

The Gap has joined a growing count of companies that have stepped on the Chinese government's toes on the sensitive topic of Taiwan, the self-ruled island that mainland China claims as part of its territory. The clothing retailer apologized Monday for printing T-shirts displaying a map of China without Taiwan, saying it "respects China's sovereignty and territorial integrity," according to a tweet by the People's Daily, the official newspaper of the Chinese Communist Party. Gap confirmed the apology and its wording in an email, and added that "this batch of products has been pulled off shelves in the Chinese market and destroyed." The company is only the latest to offer a mea culpa after committing a faux pax on a topic touchy to Beijing. Long-simmering territorial feuds from Taiwan to Tibet underline China's insistence that international companies adhere to its stances, or risk not being allowed to do business there. The world's most populous nation calls democratic Taiwan one of its … [Read more...] about The Gap sorry for T-shirts with China map that omits Taiwan

The shirt says “Keep calm and Roof On,” a play on words taken from a motivational poster used by the British government during World War II, and retails for $16.90. The process began with the placement of roughly 250 boxes that each contained 72 red T-shirts in the 56 aisles between seats at the New Orleans Pelicans home arena. That took two hours. Then came the process of placing a shirt on each of the 17,791 seats inside Smoothie King Center. That took another five hours. The Pelicans have a game-day operations staff of about 10 people to put those shirts in place. They have a crew of about 40 to 50 volunteers who rotate through the day to help. The process is long. But after seeing how the sellout crowd reacted to the Pelicans' 119-102 victory in Game 3 of a first-round NBA playoff series against the Portland Trail Blazers, they were back at it Friday (April 20). "It was cool that everyone was in their shirts," said Amanda Atkins, a 22-year-old on the team game-day operations staff. "And how crazy it was, it was like, 'Ok, this is worth it.'" Another sellout crowd is expected for Saturday. The shirts this time will have the same color but … [Read more...] about How long does it take to cover every Smoothie King Center seat with a Pelicans T-shirt?
