THOUSAND OAKS (CBSLA) — A mountain lion successfully accomplished a feat most humans would not attempt – crossing the 405 Freeway in the Sepulveda Pass. The approximately 4-year-old mountain lion became the first GPS-collared big cat when he crossed the major artery sometime between 2 and 4 a.m. on the morning of July 19, according to the National Park Service. Some portions of the 405 Freeway in the Sepulveda Pass stretch across 10 lanes, and runs parallel to a similarly busy thoroughfare in Sepulveda Boulevard, between two heavily populated areas — West L.A. and the San Fernando Valley. Harris: Daunte Wright ‘should be alive today’
Vice President Harris spoke out Tuesday on the recent police killing of Daunte Wright , a 20-year-old Black man, saying the country needs to "fully address racial injustice." “He should be alive today,” Harris said while participating in a White House roundtable on Black maternal health. “Our nation needs justice and healing and law enforcement must be held to the highest standards of accountability.” “We know that folks will keep dying if we don't fully address racial injustice and inequities in our country from implicit bias to broken systems,” she added. ADVERTISEMENT Wright was shot and killed at a traffic stop Sunday afternoon in Brooklyn Center, Minn., a suburb of Minneapolis and roughly 10 miles from where former police officer Derek Chauvin is standing trial for the May 2020 killing of George Floyd. Body camera footage of the traffic stop has been released, and the Brooklyn Center police chief said at a press conference Monday that the officer, Kim Potter, … [Read more...] about Harris: Daunte Wright ‘should be alive today’
Derek Chauvin trial: Prosecutors rest their case in George Floyd’s death
MINNEAPOLIS — Prosecutors rested their case Tuesday at the murder trial of former Officer Derek Chauvin after 11 days of testimony and a mountain of video depicting George Floyd’s final moments, opening the way for the defense to present its side. Chauvin’s lawyer has argued that the now-fired white officer did what he was trained to do and that Floyd died because of his illegal drug use and a heart condition, not because of Chauvin pinning him to the pavement last May. During the prosecution side of the case, the wrenching video of Floyd gasping for air was played for the jury along with other bystander footage and police body-camera video of the 46-year-old Black man’s slow-motion death. Law enforcement experts and veteran Minneapolis police officials, including the police chief himself, testified that Chauvin’s knee on Floyd’s neck for as much as 9 1/2 minutes was excessive and contrary to his training and departmental policy. And medical experts testified that Floyd … [Read more...] about Derek Chauvin trial: Prosecutors rest their case in George Floyd’s death
White Minnesota cop who fatally shot Black motorist resigns
BROOKLYN CENTER, Minn. — A white police officer who fatally shot a Black man during a traffic stop in a Minneapolis suburb resigned Tuesday, as did the city’s police chief — moves that the mayor said he hoped would help heal the community and lead to reconciliation after two nights of protests and unrest. The resignations from Officer Kim Potter and Police Chief Tim Gannon came two days after the death of 20-year-old Daunte Wright in Brooklyn Center. Potter, a 26-year veteran, had been on administrative leave following Sunday’s shooting, which happened as the Minneapolis area was already on edge over the trial of an officer charged in George Floyd’s death. Brooklyn Center Mayor Mike Elliott said at a news conference that the city had been moving toward firing Potter when she resigned. Elliott said he hoped her resignation would “bring some calm to the community,” but that he would keep working toward “full accountability under the law.” “We have to make sure that justice is … [Read more...] about White Minnesota cop who fatally shot Black motorist resigns
