In response to increasing calls to reform the Supreme Court, President Biden has appointed a judicial commission to study the possibility of increasing the size of the Supreme Court and adopting term limits for justices. The judicial commission should avoid falling into the trap that the United States has little to learn from other countries. The experience of the Supreme Court of India, the largest common law court in the world with jurisdiction over one billion people, suggests that imposing term limits on justices of the Supreme Court of the United States could negatively impact judicial independence. A court with a revolving door of justices could also frequently flip flop on issues of major significance, including abortion. Legal scholars Steven Calabresi and James Lindren argue that imposing term limits of 18 years on justices and giving each president the ability to appoint two justices each term will depoliticize the current appointments process. Although … [Read more...] about Lessons from India on the issue of Supreme Court justice term limits

Feehery: The left-wing hysteria machine
You can see the scattered remnants of the left-wing hysteria machine on signs throughout my Capitol Hill neighborhood. Sen. Thom Tillis: Biden’s border crisis – he promised security, dignity to migrants. This is how he’s failed
close Video Biden administration ‘out of touch’ on the border crisis: Texas Gov. Abbott Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on the Biden administration facing backlash over border policies. President Joe Biden can deny it all he wants, but the reality is we have a crisis at our southern border. I saw it with my own eyes last month when I visited the U.S.-Mexico border in Texas. The surge of unaccompanied minors , the subpar living conditions of migrants, and the state of an overworked and overwhelmed Border Patrol have been direct consequences of the Biden administration’s failed policies. As president, he has done neither. Convicting Police of Murder Remains Rare in US
It took just three days after the April 11 killing of a young Black man by a white police officer in Minnesota for local prosecutors to announce charges in the case. Former Brooklyn Center police officer Kim Potter was charged on Wednesday with second-degree manslaughter in the shooting and killing of 20-year-old Daunte Wright during a traffic stop, Washington County Attorney Pete Orput announced. Potter's chief said Potter intended to use her Taser electroshock weapon but instead accidentally fired her gun. "We will vigorously prosecute this case and intend to prove that Officer Potter abrogated her responsibility to protect the public when she used her firearm rather than her Taser," Imran Ali, a prosecutor in Orput's office, said in a statement . While Wright's family is calling for murder charges against Potter, the alacrity with which Orput acted marks a shift from just a few years ago, when investigators would routinely spend months on a police shooting case only to … [Read more...] about Convicting Police of Murder Remains Rare in US
