New York is roaring back from the worst of the pandemic. Why isn’t San Francisco?
NEW YORK CITY — On a scorching summer evening, with humidity choking the city, thousands of sweaty visitors lined up to ascend almost 1,400 feet up in the air. Children squealed in delight as they disembarked on the 57th floor Summit observatory at the One Vanderbilt tower, as all of Manhattan unfolded in front of them through glass windows, from the delicate, silvery tip of the Chrysler Building to One World Trade Center catching the setting sun, a symbol of the city’s rebirth from a 2001 tragedy. San Francisco also knows how to attract people during these bizarre times — take Outside Lands , for instance — but there’s a difference between an annual extravaganza and, in Summit’s case, a typical Monday. Lethargic downtown San Francisco lacks the energy and sheer mass of daily locals and tourists that have reinvigorated Midtown Manhattan and beyond to provide a sense of how life in this metropolis used to be. There’s always been a disparity — New York has 10 times the … [Read more...] about New York is roaring back from the worst of the pandemic. Why isn’t San Francisco?
This state just passed California as the place with the most expensive gas
For the first time since March, the national average price for a gallon of gas fell below the $4 mark this week, according to GasBuddy. But what about in California and the Bay Area? Gas prices skyrocketed in the United States following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February — reaching record highs of more than $6 per gallon in California and across the Bay Area . The COVID-19 pandemic and fears of a recession also contributed to the rise in gas prices, petroleum analysts said. On Tuesday, the national average price for a gallon of gas dropped to $3.99, officials from GasBuddy said in a news release. That number fell slightly again on Wednesday to $3.97 per gallon, the company said. The AAA also anticipated the price drop this week, attributing it to low oil prices, low gas demand and economic concerns. A recent AAA survey found that nearly two-thirds of drivers have been driving less since March due to high gas prices, lowering the demand and cost of gas, … [Read more...] about This state just passed California as the place with the most expensive gas
Bay Briefing: What we know about D.A. Brooke Jenkins’ six-figure disclosure
Good morning, Bay Area. It’s Thursday, Aug. 11, and Bay Bridge traffic has rebounded to nearly 2019 levels. Here’s what you need to know to start your day. San Francisco D.A. scrutinized Questions are being raised after city records show San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins was paid more than $100,000 by a nonprofit organization formed by a Silicon Valley billionaire who helped bankroll the recall of her predecessor, Chesa Boudin. The disclosure provoked controversy because Jenkins said she worked on the recall in a volunteer capacity. While experts say it doesn’t appear Jenkins broke any law, the San Francisco Ethics Commission could initiate an investigation. So far, none of her political allies say this has changed their decisions to endorse her candidacy for the November election. Before the disclosure, Jenkins secured top endorsements from San Francisco Democrats who hadn’t supported the recall. The billionaire behind the nonprofit and a top donor to … [Read more...] about Bay Briefing: What we know about D.A. Brooke Jenkins’ six-figure disclosure
Amid drought, some California communities are forced to rely on hauled-in or bottled water. This map shows where
Many small and rural communities across California are vulnerable to drought and water shortages as they lack the diverse water sources and infrastructure of big cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles. In some cases, these communities are forced to rely on bottled water or water hauled in from elsewhere, which experts say is costly and unsustainable . Data from the state water board’s 2022 “ Drinking Water Needs Assessment ” shows that nearly 90 water providers across the state, including six in the Bay Area, have had to resort to bottled or hauled-in water to fully meet their communities’ drinking water needs in the past three years. The report finds that California’s ongoing drought played a role in straining supply for some of these providers. There are more than 7,000 water systems in California that provide water for people through pipes or other types of connections, and they vary in size, from those serving large cities to ones built for apartment complexes or … [Read more...] about Amid drought, some California communities are forced to rely on hauled-in or bottled water. He’s a top-ranked basketball prodigy. But should an 8-year-old be ranked at all?
King Tari Johnson is a 4-foot-8, 91½-pound 8-year-old from Stockton whose mother packs his Looney Tunes lunchbox with ham, salami and cheese sandwiches she cuts into his favorite shapes: stars, footballs and, of course, basketballs. He’s also the future of the NBA. At least, that’s what a couple of websites that track this sort of thing want you to believe. King Tari, with his smooth ballhandling, advanced footwork and deep shooting range, is considered one of the nation’s best third-grade basketball players. If all goes as planned, he could be a household name in, oh, about a decade. As for the near term? King Tari just wants a growth spurt. Of all the potential pitfalls on his path to the NBA, genes might prove his undoing: His father stands 5-10, and his mom is 5-2. “I’m hoping he grows to be at least 6 feet,” said Tari Johnson, King Tari’s dad and personal trainer. “That would definitely help his chances of getting to the league.” King Tari, a giggly, soft-spoken boy who … [Read more...] about He’s a top-ranked basketball prodigy.
