An entire generation enters the post-college labor force knowing nothing but the New England Patriots being the epitome of consistent greatness in North American professional team sports. That should be on one of the annual Beloit College Mindset Lists, that annual list of things showing how incoming freshmen view the world differently than their professors’ generations. Super Sunday displays that transition most obviously. After appearing in only two of the first 35 Super Bowls (and losing those), the Patriots stroll into their eighth Super Bowl in the last 17 Sunday. They do so with a chance to win three Super Bowls in four seasons for the second time as a franchise. A previous incarnation, with only head coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady in common with this one, started this dynastic run by going three for four from 2001-2004. They’re the most consistent winners on CBS outside of NCIS and Chuck Lorre sitcoms. They’re now the NFL leaders in Super Bowl … [Read more...] about From depressing to dynastic: The Super Bowl history of the New England Patriots

With a trip to the Super Bowl on the line, could the New England Patriots really be undone by a hand injury to their legendary quarterback? Tom Brady has been dealing with a stitched-up right hand that was cut during Wednesday practice, but the veteran is expected to start in the AFC Championship against the Jacksonville Jaguars at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, Sunday. Brady's hand injury does not involve any ligament or bone damage, but the stitches could impact his throws, according to reports. But ESPN's Mike Reiss reported that teammates said Brady was seen throwing all over the field during practice Friday and after the Patriots had listed him as “limited” in the team’s Thursday participation report. All reports have indicated that Brady will play through the cut, though the extent of the injury remains unknown. Brady, who prefers not to wear a glove on his throwing hand, was seen wearing two red gloves this week and there's a … [Read more...] about Tom Brady Injury Update: Hand Problems To Limit New England Patriots QB vs. Jaguars?
New England Patriots’ fans received a brief scare Wednesday when the team announced that Tom Brady would not be available to the media because he was meeting with the medical staff. The quarterback suffered a hand injury when one of his teammates accidentally ran into him during practice. Brady was limited in practice because of his jammed throwing hand, though there doesn’t appear to be much cause for concern. X-rays were negative, and he’s expected to play Sunday afternoon against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2018 AFC Championship Game. It’s unknown if Brady will practice Thursday afternoon. #Patriots QB Tom Brady’s right hand “should be OK,” per someone close to him. Only six teams remain in the Super Bowl hunt ahead of Sunday's games. On Saturday, the Philadelphia Eagles entered their matchup with the Atlanta Falcons as three-point underdogs, but edged the NFC champs, 15-10. The New England Patriots, heavy favorites against the Tennessee Titans, cruised to a 35-14 victory. Oddsmakers continue to like what they see in the Patriots. New England's Super Bowl odds improved to 7/5 and their odds to advance out of the AFC are an impressive 5/12, according to betting site VegasInsider. Bill Belichick's squad will face the winner of the Jacksonville Jaguars-Pittsburgh Steelers. Pittsburgh is a seven-point favorite at home on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles still trail the Minnesota Vikings in both Super Bowl odds and NFC odds. The Vikings, who are five-point favorites against the New Orleans Saints in Sunday's late game, have 3/1 odds to win the Super Bowl and have 6/5 odds to come out of the NFC. The Eagles have 3/2 odds to reach the Super Bowl … [Read more...] about Super Bowl Betting Odds: Patriots, Steelers, Eagles, Vikings With Strong Chance To Win NFL Title
For a team supposedly embroiled in controversy, the New England Patriots know how to hide it well. They started slowly, but the Patriots dominated the Tennessee Titans, 35-14, on Saturday night and advanced to their 12th AFC championship game under Bill Belichick and Tom Brady and their seventh straight appearance for the right to go to the Super Bowl. The Patriots will wait until Sunday to find out who they play in the title game at Gillette Stadium next week. It either will be a rematch with the rival Pittsburgh Steelers, whom they beat in a Week 15 thriller at Heinz Field, or the first meeting against the Jacksonville Jaguars that counts (they met in the preseason) since early in the 2015 regular season, a 51-17 New England rout. The Titans actually struck first in this game, driving 95 yards for a 7-0 edge — rookie Corey Davis’ first career touchdown — to quiet the crowd. Brady and the Patriots’ offense also got off to a slow start, punting twice … [Read more...] about New England Patriots answer questions about discord, dominate Tennessee Titans
Bill Belichick stated unequivocally earlier this week that he will be back to coach the New England Patriots in 2018, which means there is a better than 50-50 chance he will. That is no slap at all at Belichick, it’s just that the reality in the NFL is that what’s true today can change dramatically tomorrow. But according to all our sources at Pro Football Weekly, we can take the Pats’ boss at his word. The status of his offensive and defensive coordinators, however, is in a great deal more limbo. Perhaps the worst-kept secret in sports is that Detroit Lions general manager Bob Quinn’s first choice for the next head coach of the Lions is Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia. According to our sources the only way that doesn’t happen is if Patricia chooses to stay with Belichick, which wouldn’t be at all surprising, or Quinn gets cold feet waiting on Patricia through a long playoff run should the Pats get to the Super Bowl while other staffs … [Read more...] about Bill Belichick will be back with New England Patriots, but will his coordinators?
Pittsburgh Steelers star Antonio Brown is expected to play against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday in the AFC divisional round playoff game after suffering a calf injury against the New England Patriots on Dec. 17. But even with the top wide out back in action, the Steelers still have less of a shot to reach the Super Bowl than the defending champions. According to VegasInsider, the Steelers have 9/4 odds to come out of the AFC, compared to Patriots' 4/7 odds. The Jaguars are listed at 8/1 to come out of the AFC, while the Tennessee Titans are the biggest longshot at 25/1. Oddsmakers give the Patriots at 7/4 odds to win the Super Bowl. New England is followed by the Minnesota Vikings (7/2) and then the Steelers (11/2). The Patriots have been favorites to win the Super Bowl since before the start of the season. The Steelers have been near the top for most of the season and had the second-best odds ahead of their Week 15 meeting with the Patriots. AFC Odds … [Read more...] about Steelers Betting Odds: Does Pittsburgh Have A Better Shot At The Super Bowl Than The Patriots?
In a year when two-thirds of the NFL playoff field is new, the AFC still features fixtures Tom Brady and Ben Roethlisberger, who have seven Super Bowl rings between them, and Alex Smith, who is coming off his best season of his 13-year career. The trio of graybeard QBs led their teams to division titles again this year, and for the second straight season they won’t have to worry about Von Miller wrecking their Super Bowl hopes. The Broncos missed the playoff party again along with the Texans, Raiders and Dolphins, who were here last year. The Bills are back for the first time in 17 seasons, the Jaguars for the first time in a decade and the Titans return for the first time since 2008. The AFC gets wild-card weekend started Saturday with the Titans visiting the Chiefs, who haven’t won a playoff game at Arrowhead Stadium in 14 years. On Sunday, the Bills visit the Jaguars. NEW YORK (AP) - Tom Brady and the New England Patriots ended the regular season where they started it. Being chased by the rest of the NFL. The Patriots finished the regular season as the No. 1 team in the final AP Pro32 poll on Tuesday, receiving 11 of 12 first-place votes for 381 points in balloting by media members who regularly cover the NFL. I can't wait," said Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk. "It could prove a better matchup than the Super Bowl." The Minnesota Vikings (13-3), who were tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers last week, remained at No. 2 with 367 points.
