Four years ago, Patrick Tomlinson tweeted out that he never found Saturday Night Live legend Norm Macdonald funny. That largely innocuous hot take has since resulted in a yearslong mass harassment campaign, culminating in the sci-fi author receiving countless death threats and being on the receiving end of multiple “swatting” attempts—hoaxing a serious law-enforcement emergency at a target’s home—the last of which was just days ago. Worse yet, his anonymous tormentors are protected by the law. Throughout this time, Tomlinson’s antagonists have gathered online on a message board ostensibly devoted to fans of a now-defunct shock radio show but that in reality now functions as a forum to obsessively troll and dox the writer and his family while cheerfully engaging in extremely misogynistic, racist, and homophobic behavior. And the attacks haven’t stopped there. Tomlinson and his wife have both been the victims of impersonators spoofing their email and social media accounts … [Read more...] about Internet Trolls Have Tormented This Sci-Fi Writer for Years—and He Can’t Stop Them

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 Carl, the alpha male coyote who swaggered for six years through San Francisco parks, died on a summer night in the city’s botanical garden , at the hands of a federal sharpshooter. Authorities had made the agonizing decision to execute Carl after a series of transgressions in the spring of 2021, the year he seemed to shed any inhibition about human contact. Parents shared tales of nerve-rattling close encounters, and a video surfaced of the canine weaving through picnickers and sunbathers in Golden Gate Park before bee-lining toward a small boy feeding ducks. At that point, city officials knew they had to act. It took months for federal agents with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to finally corner the wayward coyote on July 17, 2021. They waited until the garden closed, then lured Carl out of his den by playing an amplified recording of coyote pups wailing in distress. When … [Read more...] about An infamous S.F. coyote named Carl was shot dead. The killing could lead to even more coyote-human conflict
close Video They’re making up lies now: Herschel Walker Georgia Senate candidate Herschel Walker responds to abortion allegations on ‘Hannity.’ Republican Senate nominee in Georgia Herschel Walker denies a claim that 13 years ago he paid for a girlfriend’s abortion. "It is a flat-out lie, and now you know how important this seat is," the former college and professional football star said on Fox News’s "Hannity" on Monday night. Walker’s denial came a couple of hours after a report that Walker in 2009 urged an unnamed former girlfriend to get an abortion after she became pregnant while they were dating, and that he reimbursed her $700 for the procedure. The report from The Daily Beast cited interviews with woman who said she had a bank receipt showing Walker’s alleged payment, and a "get well" card that he reportedly sent her. The report said the woman provided proof of her intimate relationship with Walker, and that they corroborated … [Read more...] about Georgia GOP Senate candidate Herschel Walker denies bombshell report that he paid for a girlfriend’s abortion

It may be all too much for Trump’s friend Herschel Walker. Photo: Todd Kirkland/Getty Images To fully understand the crisis that has overtaken Herschel Walker ’s U.S. Senate campaign in the last day you have to comprehend the heroic image he had in Georgia heading into this first run for office. The man universally known in his native state simply as “Herschel” was more than an iconic athlete who won the Heisman Trophy and carried the University of Georgia Bulldogs to their first (and until last year their only) national championship. In a sport and in an era full of preening, self-celebrating peacocks, Walker was quietly stolid, even humble; self-sacrificing (he played most of the 1981 game that won the championship with a shoulder separation, and once rescued the victim of a car accident while out for his morning run); and personally conservative (in college he often expressed the desire to become an FBI agent). In addition, not to be too delicate about it, he was a … [Read more...] about Can Herschel Walker Survive the Implosion of His Heroic Image?
The Lincoln Project, the super PAC created in late 2019 to help defeat Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election, is one of the largest trolling operations in modern human history, designed to alter the country’s political future by getting inside—and thoroughly screwing with—the commander-in-chief’s head. Formed and led by disenfranchised big-time Republican consultants and strategists, it produced viral ads that took the fight directly to Trump. Thanks to its blistering attacks, it became a hit with those on both sides of the political aisle, although its stratospheric ascent was interrupted by a series of bombshells that called into question the motives , and character, of the men and women behind it. Far from a feel-good fable, it turned out to be a more complex tale about activism and avarice, nobility and self-interest, loyalty and betrayal, success and scandal. As co-founder Steve Schmidt admits, “Make no mistake: the idea that the Lincoln Project story is the story … [Read more...] about How the Lincoln Project Hoodwinked Anti-Trump Liberals
The rise of Donald Trump has created a new class of disaffected former conservatives . They have rebranded as conscientious objectors to Trump and Trumpism, so motivated by the present threat that partisan politics and policy preferences must take a backseat. While the Never Trump movement contains myriad smaller organizations fighting for shared resources and often duplicating efforts in the process, its goals are most clearly expressed by a group of former conservative campaign hands and staffers called the Lincoln Project. They’ve set out to elect Democrats up and down the ballot, targeting even the most liberal-leaning Republicans in the Senate. The group purports to target disaffected conservatives and provide the reassurance and support they need to vote for Democrats. But what the Lincoln Project fails to acknowledge is precisely what led to Donald Trump’s election in the first place: that for millions of American conservatives, policy-oriented convictions are important … [Read more...] about The Lincoln Project Isn’t Helping Anyone but Themselves
