Coloradans in Congress from both political parties applauded President Joe Biden ’s plan to withdraw all American troops from Afghanistan by mid-September and end America’s longest war. “We cannot continue to spend billions of dollars there and send our men and women there in perpetuity,” said Rep. Jason Crow , an Aurora Democrat who served in Afghanistan as an Army Ranger in 2004 and 2005. About 2,300 Americans have died in the war, according to Defense Department estimates , including 38 Coloradans. The first was Sgt. Daniel Romero , a 30-year-old from Lafayette, in a rocket explosion near Kandahar in 2002. The most recent was Sgt. Will Lindsay , a 33-year-old from Cortez, during a firefight in Kunduz Province in 2019. Crow said he is concerned that the Biden administration’s plans to withdraw the remaining 2,500 troops by Sept. 11 – as first reported by The Associated Press – is not contingent on the Taliban complying with a power-sharing agreement with the … [Read more...] about Colorado’s congressional delegation in agreement on ending the war in Afghanistan

Keeping China out of Taiwan will take a tough stand from Biden
As U.S. relations with China have deteriorated, there has been a great deal of alarmist comment on the possibility of the People’s Republic of China attempting to reunify with Taiwan by force. These reflections are often tossed off a bit glibly: For historical comparison, the Taiwan (or Formosa) Straits are 120 miles wide, six times the width of the English Channel, and the 1944 invasion of Normandy was supported by overwhelming air, land and sea forces against the Nazi defenders. Any Chinese invasion force would have to include a huge number of amphibious craft, as the Chinese could not imagine that they could simply deliver large numbers of armed men straight onto Taiwan’s sea walls and piers, as Gen. Douglas MacArthur did in part of one of the 20th century’s great military actions, in 1950 at Inchon, Korea. The People’s Republic could not possibly imagine parachuting into Taiwan forces adequate to take over the island of 28 million people. The Taiwanese army has (depending on … [Read more...] about Keeping China out of Taiwan will take a tough stand from Biden
US Military Has Done What It Can In Afghanistan, Sen. Tim Kaine Says
Democratic Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine said in a Wednesday interview that the U.S. military has done all it can during its 20 years in Afghanistan. “The U.S. military has done what it can in 20 years. The president is set to announce a deadline for all American troops to be out of Afghanistan by Sept. 11, 2021, senior administration officials said . Russia: Biden Did Not Mention Political Prisoner Navalny in ‘Businesslike’ Call with Putin
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov claimed Tuesday’s phone call between President Joe Biden and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin was “businesslike” and Biden did not use the opportunity to raise the issue of political prisoner Alexei Navalny, imprisoned after accusing Putin of an assassination attempt. The White House claimed in its readout of the call – Biden’s second with the Russian strongman since his inauguration – that Biden expressed “concerns” over Putin’s sudden, rapid buildup of military equipment on the border with Ukraine, which followed that nation’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, signing an executive decree putting into motion a plan to liberate Ukrainian Crimea from Russian colonization. The White House also claimed the two leaders discussed negotiations regarding the START nuclear arms agreement, which Biden abruptly agreed to extend for five years despite the Russians only asking for a one-year extension. Under President Donald Trump, the United States … [Read more...] about Russia: Biden Did Not Mention Political Prisoner Navalny in ‘Businesslike’ Call with Putin
