Weather update: Winter Storm Warning issued for Macomb County
Temperatures in Macomb County have been hovering above freezing and the rain stopped but a Winter Storm Warning has been issued for the area. The temperatures are steadily decreasing and could be in the low 30s when a low pressure system moving in from Indiana brings another round of rain. “The freezing mark for your area is predicted to be late afternoon or early evening, about 7 or 8 p.m.,” said Alex Manion, meteorologist with the National Weather Service. The National Weather Service early Saturday issued an ice storm warning starting at 2 p.m. Saturday and extending through 2 p.m. Sunday. The warning means total ice accumulations of a half inch are expected, making traffic difficult and causing downed tree limbs and power lines. The warning includes Erie, Niagara, Orleans, Genesee, Wyoming, Monroe and Livingston counties. A winter weather advisory will be in effect from 5 p.m. Saturday to 8 a.m. in the Southern Tier where total ice accumulations of a tenth of an inch to a quarter inch are expected. That could cause power outages and tree damage there as well, the weather service said. Total ice accumulation expected in Upstate New York through 2 p.m. Sunday.National Weather Service Syracuse, N.Y. -- A destructive ice storm could bring down trees today in Western New York, and high winds expected Sunday and Monday could cause even more damage and power outages. The National Weather Service has issued a rare ice storm warning for Western New York. Weather service forecasters say a half-inch of ice is possible today and Sunday, enough to break tree branches and bring down power lines. High winds could make it worse; a high wind watch is in effect for the Tug Hill, where gusts could hit 60 mph. "Significant icing and gusty winds are expected," the weather service said.
