One lucky lottery player in Stillwater is having a good end to the week, while someone in Wisconsin struck it really, really big. A Powerball player in Wisconsin won the $768 million jackpot on Wednesday; the winning ticket was sold in the Milwaukee suburb of New Berlin. The Powerball drawing on Wednesday also yielded a $2 million ticket in Minnesota. According to the Minnesota Lottery, that winning ticket was sold at the Holiday gas station at 2500 Orleans St. in Stillwater. The numbers on that ticket matched the first five numbers, which is normally worth $1 million, but since the player added a Power Play option for an extra $1, the prize was doubled to $2 million, said Emily Frost, a spokeswoman for the Minnesota Lottery. “Lesson learned: Always add the Power Play option to your ticket because a dollar can go a long way,” Frost said. The numbers announced Wednesday are 16, 20, 37, 44, 62 and the Powerball number is 12. After 67 years, Fields Arthur realizes it’s a long shot. In 1951, Arthur was serving in the U.S. Air Force in Osceola, Wis., taking a nine-month course in radio mechanics. On Saturday nights, he and fellow airmen would head to downtown Stillwater for dances. One night Arthur, then 22, met a telephone operator named Tina Anderson. She was 19 and lived in Stillwater. A few months later, Arthur was shipped almost overnight to Korea and lost touch with Anderson. Now, at the age of 89, Arthur wants to find out what happened to her. “I’d like to talk to her one more time,” said Arthur, who lives in Lakeside, Calif. “I’d like to see how she made out since we parted company. I’m just curious. I have a lot of time on my hands.” Arthur reached out to the Stillwater school district last month to ask for help. District employees searched yearbooks and alumni directories, but couldn’t find a record of a girl named “Anderson” or … [Read more...] about They danced and dreamed on Saturday nights. STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Residents in Stillwater will soon have a place to pay their respects to those who died during a homecoming parade nearly three years ago. The $100,000 Stillwater Strong Memorial is scheduled to be dedicated on Oct. 26, the Stillwater News Press reported. The memorial will feature a 6-foot tall (2-meter tall) steel ribbon sitting on top of a concrete base with descriptions of the four people who died when a woman drove a car into a crowd of spectators. The land was donated by the city and will include trees, walkways, two concrete benches and a Stillwater Strong sign. "It is really going to be a nice tribute," said Scott Petty, executive director of the Stillwater Medical Center Foundation, who wrote a book about the tragedy. The book's profits will help fund the memorial. The 2015 incident occurred during Oklahoma State University's homecoming parade. Those killed were Nikita Nakal, 23, from India; 2-year-old Nash Lucas; and married couple Bonnie and … [Read more...] about Stillwater creating memorial for homecoming parade crash

Two mothers unveiled the green highway sign on a June morning. Moments earlier, members of a solemn crowd stood in the grass next to a parking lot and bowed their heads. Mike Chase, the director of Strode Funeral Home, delivered a prayer. His steady voice carried above the roar of the vehicles passing the Ampride gas station beside Highway 33. Then Robin Briggs and Anne Fultz untied the fasteners that held a cream tarp over the road marker. Be the first to know. No one covers what is happening in our community better than we do.
