A report published by the Urban Institute argues millions of Americans live in “education deserts” with no access to a college education, either in a physical building or online. Yet in Oklahoma and elsewhere, there's not much evidence of a shortage. The bigger problem is the lack of students prepared for college coursework. The report, “Disconnected from Higher Education: How Geography and Internet Speed Limit Access to Higher Education,” declares that “3 million American adults lack access to higher education based on where they live. These people live more than 25 miles from a broad-access public university and do not have access to the high-speed internet connection needed for online education.” The report suggests several ways to expand the physical and online presence of colleges into these locations. The best new journalist of the year was Jordan Bishop of the Stillwater News Press.The winners were announced Friday.The Stillwater newspaper took second place in the general excellence category for medium-sized newspapers, while the Norman Transcript was third. Poverty-indicator rates are not available for individual private schools, although, according to 2015 data from the National Center for Education Statistics, 9.6 percent of private-school PK-12 students nationwide were living in poverty, compared with 20.9 percent for public-school students.
