House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy has a fresh spring in his step after the Republicans defied the odds and professional political prognosticators by picking up 15 seats in the 2020 congressional elections. McCarthy, who has his eyes on the majority in November 2022, approached the 2020 congressional elections differently than Republicans in recent history have traditionally targeted congressional electoral efforts, and his moves paid off—and not only infuriated but befuddled the beltway pundit class. For the first time since 1994, in 2020 no GOP incumbent running for reelection lost. Meanwhile, McCarthy blew away fundraising records previously set by former House Speaker Paul Ryan—astonishing since he did it from the minority. Usually, House political leaders do better raising money from the majority. That’s not to mention the most significant development which is a freshman class entering Congress in 2021 that represents perhaps the most diverse in party history with the most … [Read more...] about Exclusive: After 2020 Gains, Kevin McCarthy Eyes House GOP Majority, Speaker’s Gavel in Midterms

Trump Awards Highest US Civilian Honor to Tiger Woods
WASHINGTON - When Tiger Woods won the Masters on April 14, President Donald Trump declared he was going to award him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and ordered his aides to schedule the event as soon as possible. On Monday, Trump got what he asked for. At a ceremony in the sun-splashed White House Rose Garden, Trump made the 43-year-old Woods the fourth, and youngest, professional golfer to receive the nation's highest civilian honor, after Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Charlie Sifford. With 81 PGA Tour victories, Woods is one shy of Sam Snead's all-time record, and with 15 major tournament victories, he trails only Nicklaus, who has 18. But it was his dramatic Masters victory at Augusta National Golf Club last month, ending an 11-year major championship drought, that capped a years-long comeback from injuries and drama in his personal life, including an arrest two years ago for driving under the influence. Trump eagerly leapt onto the Tiger bandwagon. The two have … [Read more...] about Trump Awards Highest US Civilian Honor to Tiger Woods
Cardinals’ Nolan Arenado fitting in seamlessly with new franchise
Nolan Arenado arrived at spring training about a week before the rest of the St. Louis Cardinals’ position players, trying to get accustomed to the time change of Florida from his home on the West Coast along with learning his way around his first new team in a dozen years in pro baseball. Turns out the time change has been every bit the challenge of the new organization. “I was hurting there for a while,” Arenado admitted, “but I’m good now.” The Cardinals hope he can be great. They were quiet almost the entire offseason, the grand sum of their moves amounting to the re-signing of erstwhile ace Adam Wainwright and a couple smaller transactions. But that all changed in the weeks before camp, when they got into serious talks for what became a three-team deal with the Rockies and Mets to land the star third baseman. Suddenly, the Cardinals had pulled off one of the biggest acquisitions in baseball, solidifying their lineup with a five-time All-Star and three-time home run … [Read more...] about Cardinals’ Nolan Arenado fitting in seamlessly with new franchise
Reeling Rockies face long list of questions in post-Nolan Arenado era
In St. Louis, they’re welcoming Nolan Arenado with billboards along I-70. In Colorado, Rockies fans remain angry as they come to grips with Monday’s lopsided trade that sent the star third baseman to the Cardinals. And those fans — those who have not vowed to boycott the team — are wondering what comes next for the home team. Good question. In the eye of the hurricane, general manager Jeff Bridich and owner Dick Monfort attempted to put a positive spin on things during their Tuesday news conference. Said Bridich: “This certainly is not a total teardown and rebuild.” Added Monfort: “We have an extremely talented team. They’re built to compete. It’s time for them to take the next step.” But baseball pundits aren’t buying it. FanGraphs, an analytics-based website, called the trade “an unmitigated disaster” for the Rockies. In ESPN’s latest rankings of starting lineups, the Rockies came in dead last. Regardless, the Rockies will report to spring training Feb. 17 and are … [Read more...] about Reeling Rockies face long list of questions in post-Nolan Arenado era
