Black Music Month: Inspiring Words From Famous Musicians
On June 7, 1979, then President Jimmy Carter declared that June would be the month of black music. Black Music Month honors the past, present and future musicians and producers in the industry. To pay homage this month, we look at not the lyrics that have touched our lives, but the words artists have spoken. “Tomorrow is always another day to make things right. ” – Lauryn Hill RELATED: Look Inside The Setup Of Super Bowl 55 “Everything that happened to me as a child involved music. It was part of every day life, as automatic as breathing.” – Nina Simone “I was born with music inside me. Music was one of my parts. Like my ribs, my kidneys, my liver, my heart. Like my blood. Nolte: The Gloriously Inappropriate and Problematic ‘Blues Brothers’ (1980)
Under the belief it was the movie that would most offend today’s Woketards, last week I wrote about the gloriously inappropriate and problematic Animal House (1978). Finding myself in a Belushi mood, a few days later, I watched his next hit, 1980’s The Blues Brothers, and quickly realized today’s Hitler Youth would hate this one even more — a whole lot more. By 1970, Hollywood’s self-censoring Production Code had been dismantled, the great Norman Lear had pushed the boundaries of television with his masterpiece All in the Family , and suddenly nothing and no one was off-limits. There were no more sacred cows. No limits on satire. No protected groups. And do you want to know the best part? Almost all the satire was good-natured. When a Carlin, Pryor, Lear, and Saturday Night Live took a shot at you, you couldn’t help but … [Read more...] about Nolte: The Gloriously Inappropriate and Problematic ‘Blues Brothers’ (1980)
Author David Ritz On New Book ‘KG: A-Z’: Kevin Garnett Is A ‘Force Of Nature’
(CBS Local Sports)– Kevin Garnett was one of the most ferocious and dominant players of his generation. The man known as the Big Ticket on the basketball court was an NBA Champion, league MVP and a 15x All-Star. Garnett recently collaborated with author David Ritz on a new book from Simon & Schuster about his life and basketball career called “ KG: A-Z: An Uncensored Encyclopedia of Life, Basketball, and Everything in Between .” Unlike the typical athlete autobiography, Ritz and Garnett go from topic to topic and the book is broken up into tons of little vignettes by letter as opposed to typical chapters. While Ritz has collaborated with music icons like Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin and Janet Jackson, he was fascinated by the many layers of one of the league’s best big men to ever play the game.
