Exclusive: After 2020 Gains, Kevin McCarthy Eyes House GOP Majority, Speaker’s Gavel in Midterms
House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy has a fresh spring in his step after the Republicans defied the odds and professional political prognosticators by picking up 15 seats in the 2020 congressional elections. McCarthy, who has his eyes on the majority in November 2022, approached the 2020 congressional elections differently than Republicans in recent history have traditionally targeted congressional electoral efforts, and his moves paid off—and not only infuriated but befuddled the beltway pundit class. For the first time since 1994, in 2020 no GOP incumbent running for reelection lost. Meanwhile, McCarthy blew away fundraising records previously set by former House Speaker Paul Ryan—astonishing since he did it from the minority. Usually, House political leaders do better raising money from the majority. That’s not to mention the most significant development which is a freshman class entering Congress in 2021 that represents perhaps the most diverse in party history with the most … [Read more...] about Exclusive: After 2020 Gains, Kevin McCarthy Eyes House GOP Majority, Speaker’s Gavel in Midterms
UK Unemployment Rises for 6th Consecutive Month
LONDON (AP) – The U.K. unemployment rate rose for a six straight month in December as renewed coronavirus restrictions shut down most businesses across the country. The Office for National Statistics said Tuesday that unemployment rose to 5.1% in December, up 0.1% from the previous month and 1.3% from a year earlier. The number of people on company payrolls has dropped by 726,000 since the pandemic began last February, with 58.5% of the decline coming among people under 25. The figures don´t show the full impact of COVID-19 restrictions on employment because some 1.9 million workers remain on furlough. A government program covers 80% of their wages. Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Monday announced plans to slowly end a national lockdown in England in hopes of safely reopening the economy and social life as infection rates drop and widespread vaccinations reduce the threat from COVID-19. … [Read more...] about UK Unemployment Rises for 6th Consecutive Month

By Michael Hurley , CBS Boston BOSTON (CBS) — Here’s a fun one. (Well, it’s still not fun if you’re from New England, but it’s fun for the rest of football fans.) READ MORE: Life Threatening Injuries After Several People Hit On High Street In Boston While we know now that Tom Brady left the Patriots last year and surprised everybody by joining up with Bruce Arians and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, ESPN’s Adam Schefter dropped a little nugget this week that indicates Brady could have ended up with the New Orleans Saints. That possibility obviously closed when Drew Brees decided to return for his age 41 season. “Lo and behold, [Brees] came back in March. And by the way, if he hadn’t come back, I really believe that there’s a chance that Tom Brady would’ve been the Saints’ quarterback this year, and he would’ve been playing in New Orleans, not Tampa,” Schefter said on The Rich Eisen Show. “But that’s a different story.” Schefter was talking about Brees and the … [Read more...] about Schefter: Tom Brady Might Have Joined Saints If Drew Brees Had Retired

Paulie Hynek (credit: CBS) “Probably a subconscious state of just knowing you got a second chance. If things are good or bad you’re going to keep going. Things got pretty bad that day, you know what I mean? And I kept going. I figure that’s where that comes from,” Paulie Hynek told us now at 22 years old. On a dairy farm in a town of barely 700 people, moving forward is a matter of survival. “That’s how family farms work,” Paulie Hynek said. It’s no different for the Hyneks, caring for 72 cows, … [Read more...] about WATCH: 20 Years Later, Paulie Hynek Froze To Death And Came Back, Reflects On ‘Second Chance’
