Coca-Cola is introducing its first bottle made from 100% recycled plastic

New York (CNN Business)Coca-Cola is launching a new bottle size for the first time in a decade, but it's what the bottle's made of that marks an even more notable first: 100% recycled plastic material. The new 13.2-ounce recyclable bottle that some customers will see on shelves this week is made entirely of other plastics, and it's the latest move in Coca-Cola's several-year initiative to reduce its plastic waste. Coke is also hoping the size attracts younger, under-25 drinkers who are seeking sustainable packaging (and sometimes even shunning the company). The new bottle will be available starting this month in select states across the Northeast, including New York and Connecticut, as well as in California and Florida, before launching nationwide this summer. Coke describes the size as a "more sippable package," and it will debut with the company's most popular sodas like Coca-Cola, Diet Coke and Coke Zero Sugar at a suggested retail price of $1.59. "We've been listening to … [Read more...] about Coca-Cola is introducing its first bottle made from 100% recycled plastic

Instagram wants Reels to be more than a hub for ‘recycled’ TikToks

(CNN Business)Instagram's short-form video feature has been flooded with popular TikToks -- and the Facebook-owned company seems to have noticed. On Tuesday, Instagram said it's making changes to the videos it recommends in the dedicated Reels tab on the home screen, including not serving up videos with watermarks or logos from other platforms as often. "We heard in research that people have a less satisfying experience when they see content that is recycled from other apps or is blurry and low resolution. So, we're making this content less discoverable in places like the Reels tab," Devi Narasimhan, a Facebook (FB) spokesperson told CNN Business. Instagram is realizing it's not so easy to knock off TikTok Instagram doesn't mention TikTok by name, but CNN Business has previously reported that it's common to see one TikTok video after another while scrolling through Reels. Some influencers have also acknowledged that they repost their TikToks on Reels. "It really does cheapen … [Read more...] about Instagram wants Reels to be more than a hub for ‘recycled’ TikToks

Recycling: Not your father’s environmental issue

To raise recycling with today’s environmentally-minded younger generations might solicit an “OK, Boomer” type of response; they are focused on the seemingly more existential challenges of climate change, environmental justice or imperiled oceans. And well they should be. But the centrality of recycling to the environmental challenges of today is underappreciated. The U.S. recycling market is broken and the impacts of its failure are increased greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), floating plastic detritus and the exposure of underprivileged communities to harmful pollutants. We can revive the recycling industry and mitigate these problems, but we need a policy fix. Prior to 2018, our recycling market functioned in large part because China bought one-third of U.S. plastic waste. That demand helped keep plastics out of our waste stream, maintained U.S. jobs and diverted waste materials from polluting incineration facilities that quickly convert plastic into GHG and other harmful air … [Read more...] about Recycling: Not your father’s environmental issue
