Are We in a Recession or a Vibecession?
Illustration: Michael Houtz When we think about the economy, there’s a tendency to rush headfirst into the swirl of numbers moving up or down each month, plot them on angular charts, and spin out a story of what it all means. Inflation, unemployment, pay raises, gas prices — together, these indicators are supposed to jell into a coherent narrative and tell us where we’re going. The problem with the current economy is that the numbers don’t make any sense. Less than a month ago, some commentators were claiming we were already in a recession , thanks to two consecutive quarters of negative GDP growth. Then the July jobs report hit, showing that the economy had added a staggering 528,000 jobs and that the unemployment rate hit a 53-year low. Prices are high, everything is expensive, and it’s sometimes impossible to find baby formula on the shelves — but for many workers, the pandemic economy has seen the balance of power shift in their favor with more people switching jobs … [Read more...] about Are We in a Recession or a Vibecession?
‘Secret Headquarters’ A Teen Twist On The Superhero Formula
(CNN) — The occasional head-scratching over why movies get sent directly to streaming isn’t an issue with “Secret Headquarters,” a spin on superheroes that tilts a lot closer to Disney Channel territory than Marvel. The real surprise is that the film was ever earmarked for a theatrical release before cooler heads prevailed, prompting it to land, unspectacularly, on Paramount+. The explanation for that initial distribution trajectory might be as simple as the fact that the film was produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, who has a long legacy of blockbusters. But everything else about the movie has a teen vibe and feels scaled toward a more modest venue and expectations. READ MORE: United Airlines Puts $10 Million Behind Plan To Shuttle Customers By Electric Aircraft The story easily boils down to a quick description that reflects the generic nature of the exercise: Teenage Charlie (Walker Scobell, recently featured in another so-so streaming sci-fi/comedy, “The Adam Project”) is … [Read more...] about ‘Secret Headquarters’ A Teen Twist On The Superhero Formula

Climate bill: Could coal communities shift to nuclear?
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A major economic bill headed to the president has “game-changing” incentives for the nuclear energy industry, experts say, and those tax credits are even more substantial if a facility is sited in a community where a coal plant is closing. The transformative bill provides the most spending to fight climate change by any one nation ever in a single push. Among the many things it could do nuclear energy experts say is spur more projects like one Bill Gates is planning in Kemmerer, Wyoming. Gates' company, TerraPower, plans to build an advanced, nontraditional nuclear reactor and employ workers from a local coal-fired power plant scheduled to close soon. Companies designing and building the next generation of nuclear reactors could pick one of two new tax credits available to carbon-free electricity generators, such as wind and solar. To ensure coal … [Read more...] about Climate bill: Could coal communities shift to nuclear?

Mystery of Murdered Man’s Death Ripped Family Apart
On the evening of June 29, 2006, Laray “Mookie” Moore and a friend chilled and listened to music when he got a call from his wife Natacha about their 15-month-old son, Laray Jr., recalls his mother Yvonne. “His wife told him to go pick up the baby who was at his aunt’s apartment,” Yvonne said in a phone interview. “He was always there for his children.” Nearly two years after his release from a 15-month prison stint on drug charges, Laray’s life was moving in a positive direction, Yvonne and other relatives told The Daily Beast. In 2005, Laray and Natacha got married. The same year, she gave birth to Junior. Around the same time, he rekindled his bond with his then-14-year-old daughter Breyona Sampson from a previous relationship. When he wasn’t working his blue collar job at a paint warehouse, Laray spent his free time taking Breyona, his nephew and their friends on frequent trips to an amusement park, teaching them how to drive and making them watch Christian sermons on … [Read more...] about Mystery of Murdered Man’s Death Ripped Family Apart
Dems near congressional passage of climate, health package
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 9 WASHINGTON (AP) — Democrats pushed their flagship climate change and health care bill toward House passage Friday, placing President Joe Biden on the brink of a back-from-the-dead triumph on his leading domestic goals that the party hopes will energize voters going into November’s elections. The narrowly divided House was poised to approve the legislation, which is but a shadow of the larger, more ambitious plan to supercharge environment and social programs that Biden and his party envisioned early last year. Even so, Democrats were thirsty to declare victory on top-tier goals such as providing Congress’ largest ever investment in curbing carbon emissions, reining in pharmaceutical costs and taxing large companies and show they can wring accomplishments out of a frequently gridlocked Washington that disillusions many voters. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, … [Read more...] about Dems near congressional passage of climate, health package
