SPRINGFIELD (CBS) – A Maine man is now facing federal charges after he allegedly set several fires and eventually destroyed a Springfield church in what prosecutors say was a racially motivated crime. Dushko Vulchev , 44, is charged with four counts of damage to religious property involving fire and one count of use of fire to commit a federal felony. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for Massachusetts announced Thursday Vulchev is now charged with a December 28 fire that destroyed the same church. He is currently in state custody and will face a federal arraignment at a later date. SPRINGFIELD (CBS) – Arson investigators are on the scene of a suspicious church fire in Springfield. The fire began Monday morning at Martin Luther King Community Presbyterian Church on Concord Terrace. SPRINGFIELD (CBS) — A Maine man was arrested for allegedly trying to set fire to a Springfield church three times in December. Dushko Vulchev of Houlton, Maine faces three counts of attempted arson and several counts of malicious damage. According to police, Vulchev tried to start a fire at the Martin Luther King Community Presbyterian Church on Concord Terrace on Dec. 13 and two fires on Dec. 15. Father James Moreno sexually assaulted a teenage boy dozens of times over two years after they met at a Denver Catholic school — including in the rectory of the city’s most prominent church. Moreno assaulted the boy more than 60 times between 1978 and 1980. He groomed him, gave him alcohol and marijuana, and raped him, according to a report released Tuesday by the Colorado Attorney General’s Office. The abuse happened all over Denver: in the rooms of St. Andrew’s Preparatory Seminary High School, in Moreno’s car, in the boy’s home, in the rectory of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in the heart of Denver, one block from the state Capitol. The teen, now grown, reported the abuse to authorities last year after the publication of a state-led investigation into child sex abuse perpetrated by Catholic priests in Colorado.
