The number of South Korean families that moved from “urban areas to farming villages” reached an “all-time high” last year, Yonhap News Agency reported Thursday, noting that the phenomenon came in response to prolonged pandemic restrictions and surging home prices nationwide. A total of 377,744 South Korean households moved from cities to the countryside in 2021. The statistic marked an increase of 5.6 percent from 2020 and the highest such figure recorded since South Korea’s federal government began compiling relevant data in 2013. “The number of people who relocated to rural areas also rose 4.2 percent on-year to 515,434 last year, marking a second consecutive on-year increase,” Yonhap reported on June 23 citing official data from South Korea’s Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. “The number of those in their 30s and younger, as well as those in their 60s and older, who opted to live in farming villages, grew 5 percent and 16.4 percent on-year, respectively, to … [Read more...] about South Korea: Pandemic Lockdowns Caused City Exodus to Farming Villages
Blue State Blues: Load-shedding, from South Africa to California
CAPE TOWN, South Africa — It was fitting that as I sat down to write this column, at 6:00 a.m. on a wintry Thursday, the electricity went out. What that means for me, staying in a comfortable hotel that provided us with emergency lights, is that I have to write in semi-darkness and use my phone to connect to the Internet. The main building has a generator: there will be breakfast. What it means for the rest of the city’s commuters and students is that their rainy day is now even more miserable. This is the morning rush — when parents are trying to feed and clothe their children before bundling them off to school, when workers are making their way into town from distant squatter camps, when business owners are unlocking their shops and factories in the hope of making payroll in a pandemic-ravaged economy. An entire day’s production, an entire lesson plan, a whole schedule is lost. And in the darkness where street lights once glowed, there is also the fear of crime along the … [Read more...] about Blue State Blues: Load-shedding, from South Africa to California

At least 22 young adults, many between the ages of 18 and 20, were found dead in a South African nightclub early Sunday in what authorities described as a possible “stampede.” Police and medical services in East London, South Africa, were called around 4 a.m. Sunday to the Enyobeni Tavern nightclub after reports of dead patrons, police told local broadcaster SABC .
