MTA chief operating officer and Smithtown resident Phil Eng will take over the role of Long Island Rail Road president, sources with knowledge of the situation said Thursday. Eng, 56, will replace Patrick Nowakowski, who announced Wednesday that after four years he was stepping down from leading the railroad, which has been plagued by major service and communication problems in recent months. Eng, who takes over the post Monday and would become the LIRR’s first minority president, joined the Metropolitan Transportation Authority in March 2017 to fill the vacant position of COO. He previously worked at the state DOT for more than three decades, beginning in 1983 as a junior engineer and graduating into key positions including construction supervisor, director of operations and regional director of the department’s New York City office. Kenny Vaccaro was thought to be one of the top defensive backs in this year's free-agent market, but that didn't prove to be the case. Finally, four weeks into free agency, Vaccaro is taking his first visit with a team. According to a league source, the safety is visiting the Miami Dolphins on Thursday (April 12). NFL Network first reported the meeting. Vaccaro was a first-round pick of the New Orleans Saints in 2013. He spent five years with the Saints, but the team decided to move on from him this offseason, signing Kurt Coleman instead of extending an offer to Vaccaro. The Knicks intend to contact Villanova's Jay Wright about their head coaching vacancy, the Daily News has learned. According to a source close to the club, Knick management believes Wright would be a perfect candidate for a rebuilding club. Wright, who has won two national championships over the last three years, has been linked to NBA jobs in the past but has never given any indication he wants to leave Villanova. "He told me years ago that he wanted to make Villanova into the Duke of the Northeast," says a person close to Wright. "It would take a lot for him to leave."
