Billionaires’ bête noire of the moment. Photo: Sean Rayford/Getty Images Investors said that if Donald Trump became president, financial markets would suffer badly. They were wrong. Now, they’re saying that if Elizabeth Warren becomes president, financial markets will suffer badly. Should we listen? I asked business columnist Josh Barro to help digest their argument — or lack of one. Ben: CNBC reports that some prominent Wall Streeters are sounding the alarm about an Elizabeth Warren presidential win (including Leon Cooperman, who has been saying a lot of things lately). They caution that if Warren emerges victorious next fall, the stock market will plummet — more than temporarily — and all hell will break loose. But these warnings echo ones they issued about President Trump in the 2016. In the end, the market, and much of the corporate world, has reacted warmly to Trump, most of whose economic policies they’re fine with. Would Warren winning … [Read more...] about Would a Warren Win Actually Tank the Market?
The author with a furry friend, Timothy Drake Riesman. A few years ago, I asked a woman I was dating what the most erotic sext I’d ever sent her was. “The one with the video of you installing the door,” she replied. I had taken all my doors out when I’d moved into my apartment because I wanted to create the illusion of more space in that shoebox of a place. I had no roommates, so the lack of a barrier between kitchenette and bedroom hadn’t had much of an impact on my makeout game for my first year there. But this woman had the poor fortune of being the first person I’d brought home after I became the father of two cats. They’re not horrible cats. Well, one of them is kind of horrible (he’s the male of the pair, of course), but they’re not quite My Cat from Hell material. That said, they don’t have a great deal of respect for personal space. So when this wonderful young lady and I were doing what grown-ups do, the … [Read more...] about Sex Confessions of a Cat Daddy
Mess with the best … Photo: Katie Chao and Ben Muessig/Shooting Brooklyn/Flickr Volunteers with the NYC Feral Cat Initiative are working to repurpose some of the city’s population of as many as half-a-million stray cats as feline special forces in the war against the rats. The Associated Press reports that the group is working to trap wild cat colonies throughout New York, spay or neuter the animals, and when the cats can’t be adopted or returned to the place they were trapped, the group will try to relocate them to areas in need of rodent control. One such successful campaign is at Manhattan’s Javits Convention Center, where sustainability manager Rebecca Marshall says they used to hire exterminators to deal with an expensive rat problem around the facility’s loading docks, but then realized that nature had a “better solution” which would cost practically nothing and help the center avoid the use of rat-killing chemicals. Marshall recently … [Read more...] about Feral Cats Are Being Deployed in New York’s War on Rats
LOS ANGELES, CA — The Astros 2017 World Series win against the Dodgers may end up with an asterisk attached. After a former Astros pitcher this week admitted his team used an outfield camera to steal pitching signs, the Dodgers on Wednesday admitted they suspected as much during the World Series. Remember those World Series Games back in 2017 against the Astros when the Dodgers' Yu Darvish twice gave up four runs in two starts lasting barely two innings? What seemed like a spectacular meltdown at the time may turn out to be something much more sinister. The Astros on Wednesday confirmed a Major League Baseball investigation into allegations that the Houston team illegally used cameras to steal the Dodgers pitching signs. If true, the Astros would be in violation of league rules. In Los Angeles, suspicions of cheating lingered since Astros sluggers dominated the Dodgers bullpen, which was supposed to be the team's strength. The suspicions were seemingly confirmed Tuesday when … [Read more...] about Astros Cheating Allegations Drudge Up Dodgers’ World Series Woes
You won’t have Shep Smith to kick around, Mr. President. Photo: Steven Ferdman/Getty Images Shep Smith, a mostly straight-news broadcaster who stood in stark contrast to many of his aggressively partisan Fox News colleagues, announced on Friday that he would be departing the network immediately. “Recently I asked the company to allow me to leave Fox News and begin a new chapter,” Smith said. “After requesting that I stay, they graciously obliged.” Smith closed with a reflection on how grateful he was to have been at the network — and a seemingly pointed plea: “Even in our currently polarized nation, it’s my hope that the facts will win the day, that the truth will always matter, that journalism and journalists will survive.” Smith, who had been at Fox News since it launched in 1996, has been at the center of a widening chasm at the network centered around President Trump. Some on the news side of the operation — Smith, … [Read more...] about Shep Smith Out at Fox News Amid Trump Tension
