Andres Iniesta was the former Barcelona soccer captain and scored the winning goal for Spain in the 2010 World Cup final. (Reuters) Andres Iniesta, the former Barcelona captain and World Cup-winning Spanish soccer star, apologized Tuesday after being criticized for posting a picture of him posing with two people clad in blackface during a popular Christian celebration. “At no time did Andres Iniesta want to bother anyone with that photograph which is the image of the illusion in Spain and apologizes to those people who may have been offended,” the statement read. The former Barcelona midfielder tweeted a picture with his wife, two children and a group of friends dressed in costumes to commemorate Three Kings Day. Two of the people in the picture, were in blackface. Iniesta is sitting on the ground at the front of the picture. As of Tuesday morning, the Twitter post had not been deleted, despite the apology. Off the Couch: New players on the A-team talk music, festivals
NOTE: This is now a standing Monday feature on A2. LISA DENTON: OK, Barry, I'm a little disoriented this morning, but it's not so bad here in the A section. I figured the only way I'd get into a news section was an obituary or crime spree, so this is way more pleasant. BARRY COURTER: It is a little different, isn't it? At least we're paired with entertainment news and not next to a Clay Bennett cartoon. I think we'd be looking up at the business end of somebody's pet if we were. The digs are different, but the job is the same. We are here to let folks know about the many reasons to get off the couch and do something fun. This is a pretty good week with Turkuaz at Songbirds on Thursday, and then Alice Cooper is Friday and Ron White is Saturday at Memorial Auditorium. I saw Cooper a couple of years ago, and it is a really fun show with guillotines and giant spiders and all. LISA: That's Thursday at my house. BARRY: I've seen White a couple of times as well, and he makes me laugh out … [Read more...] about Off the Couch: New players on the A-team talk music, festivals
FC Cincy player, coach go to great lengths to engage with the city
Patrick Brennan Cincinnati Enquirer Published 4:34 PM EDT Sep 22, 2018 Futbol Club Cincinnati is like most professional sports teams in that players and coaches aren't local for the most part. They come from almost everywhere but Cincinnati. FC Cincinnati's workforce is one that is conditioned to traveling and living in strange places for their livelihoods. And as such, branching out into the community they play for can be an extraordinary chore. The seemingly mundane and simple requirements of life – things like socializing, making living arrangements and enrolling children in local schools – isn't so simple. More and more, though, FC Cincinnati's players and staffers have grown into the city they represent. Unlike in FC Cincinnati's early days when its transient players mostly confined themselves to the club's block of apartments at a complex in Oakley, Cincinnati isn't just a stop a the constantly-spinning carousel of career … [Read more...] about FC Cincy player, coach go to great lengths to engage with the city
Stop Kicking Soccer Around—World Cup 2018 Proves that Soccer Has Finally Arrived in America
Opinion FIFA World Cup 2018 Last month, I heard one of the Philadelphia Sports Talk radio personalities complain that he hated this time of the year because nothing significant was going on in sports. He noted that the NBA and NHL playoffs had just ended and that the NFL pre-season was over a month away. Fine enough, but I hated to hear him say that he was channel surfing and could find nothing in sports to watch and that he settled on watching the Cornhole League. "What about the World Cup?!" I yelled at my car radio. That week was the kickoff of the soccer World Cup in Russia. If you didn't watch it because the United States wasn't in the tournament, you missed a great show.
