Just weeks after Colorado passed a sweeping police reform law , Greenwood Village has approved a measure that ensures its officers aren’t on the hook financially if they mistreat or harm a citizen. Greenwood Village council members unanimously passed a resolution Monday saying the city will never find its officers have acted in bad faith. That effectively shields them from having to face personal financial liability for misconduct on the job — contrary to a key stipulation of Senate Bill 217, which became law last month . “The intent of Council’s resolution was simply to inform its officers that as their employer, they would not make such a (bad-faith) finding no matter what,” Greenwood Village city attorney Tonya Haas Davidson wrote in an email Wednesday. “Nowhere in the law is an employer ever required to make a finding of bad faith.” Lawmakers who helped write the police reform bill were taken aback by Greenwood Village’s move. Cameroonian Women Mark Women’s Day with Calls for Political Inclusion
YAOUNDÉ - In Cameroon, thousands of women are holding events to mark International Women's Day and protesting their lack of political power in the country. The women, joined by rights groups, note all of Cameroon’s most powerful offices are held by men and there are only 11 female ministers, out of a 63-person Cabinet, and not even one female regional president or governor. In Cameroon’s capital, hundreds of women gathered Monday for International Women’s Day sang that all across the world women are longing to be free. Women no longer want to be in the shadows or forced to stay behind, they sing, but want to be side by side in true equality with men. Philippines: Spokesman Defends Duterte’s Call to Kill Communists, ‘Don’t Mind Human Rights’
Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s order to Philippine security forces instructing them to “kill” communist terrorists last week was legal, his spokesman said on Monday. “The president’s ‘kill, kill, kill’ order is legal because he directed … [it] at the rebels holding weapons,” Duterte’s spokesman, Harry Roque, said during a March 8 press briefing. “Under the IHL [International Humanitarian Law], the president’s ‘kill, kill, kill’ order is right because if there is an armed conflict, when your enemy has a gun and can kill you, you wouldn’t wait to get shot and killed,” he explained. “It is not against the law, the international humanitarian law, when a soldier shoots an armed NPA fighter and kills the NPA fighter,” Roque added, referring to the New People’s Army (NPA), which is the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP).
