Legislative proposals also include minimum wage hike, family and medical leave program By Bob Sanders Published: January 2, 2019 Democrats in the NH Senate say they want to freeze business tax cuts – including those that just went into effect – increase the minimum wage and mandate payroll deductions to pay for family and medical leave under their majority as the new legislative session begins. Each of the initiatives has a bit of a twist intended to make them more palatable to business, and possibly Republican Gov. Chris Sununu. The Democrats – who also have a majority in the House – announced their “Granite State Opportunity Plan” Wednesday in the Legislative Office Building, as the House convened across the street for the first time this year. The business tax bill – which will be introduced by Sen. Lou D’Allesandro, D-Manchester, would suspend the business profits tax rate at 7.9 percent, the rate it was before New Year’s, … [Read more...] about NH Senate Democratic agenda includes rollback of business tax cuts

Kelly specifies position on business tax cuts; Republicans charge flip-flop
By ETHAN DeWITT Monitor staff Saturday, October 13, 2018 Print Democratic gubernatorial candidate Molly Kelly clarified her stance on a recent set of business tax cuts this week, stating in an interview that she would support keeping one tax cut but repealing the other. In response to a questionnaire by the New Hampshire Business Review published Thursday, Kelly said that she would “keep the business enterprise tax cut in place” but would repeal “the business profits tax cut passed in 2017,” calling the latter tax “largely a tax giveaway to the wealthiest corporations in New Hampshire.”Speaking on repealing the business profits tax cut, she said: “Instead, I would invest that revenue in a way that benefits businesses and workers, including in public education, job training and affordable college.” The clarification came after months of campaigning in which Kelly railed against the tax cuts – signed by her … [Read more...] about Kelly specifies position on business tax cuts; Republicans charge flip-flop
Oregon lawmakers move quickly to vote on Kate Brown’s business tax cut
SALEM – Gov. Kate Brown's small business tax cut is on track to receive floor votes in Oregon's House and Senate this afternoon, which would allow the Legislature to wrap up the special session in a single day. Brown called for the special session earlier this spring to expand a controversial business tax break that lawmakers passed during the 2013 special session. The governor cast it as an issue of fairness to allow sole proprietors access to the lower income tax rates already available to certain other businesses. At the same time, Brown announced her support for a law to prevent business from receiving a much larger break on their Oregon taxes. It's been unclear whether Brown will be able to get her tax proposal through the Legislature in one day as she hopes. Top Democrats in the Legislature told lawmakers to plan for a weeklong session and Senate President Peter Courtney said he did not know if there were the votes necessary to pass Brown's bill. Courtney and other … [Read more...] about Oregon lawmakers move quickly to vote on Kate Brown’s business tax cut

Small businesses need health-care help and DOL can deliver it
Small business sentiment is currently at a record high, and for good reason. The Trump administration recently delivered a windfall in small-business tax cuts. It has also provided long-overdue regulatory certainty and real economic growth, on which small businesses depend. Given that small businesses are the backbone of the American economy, providing two-thirds of its new jobs, their success is shared by everyone. But there is still one gigantic hurdle facing small businesses: skyrocketing health-care costs due to ObamaCare. A forthcoming rule by the Department of Labor to expand association health plans (AHPs) will finally offer them some relief. According to a recent nationwide survey of small-business owners conducted by the Job Creators Network, three-quarters of respondents are concerned about high health-care costs. That's no surprise. Small businesses often don't have the same profit margins to absorb rising health-care costs as their … [Read more...] about Small businesses need health-care help and DOL can deliver it
