The Miami Heat signed dynamic, 6-7 forward Derrick Jones Jr., a former slam dunk contest runner-up, to a two-way contract on Sunday and waived guard Matt Williams Jr. Jones, a 20-year old out of Chester, Pennsylvania, played 38 games for the Phoenix Suns over the past two seasons including six this year before being cut on Dec. 7. Jones averaged 4.7 points, 2.2 rebounds while shooting 56 percent from the field. He also went 3 for 13 from three-point range. In the G League, Jones averaged 14.5 points and 5.6 rebounds in 19 games (17 starts) during the 2016-17 season. Last year, Jones showed off his athleticism in the NBA All-Star Game’s Slam Dunk competition where he finished second to Pacers’ wing Glenn Robinson III. Jones averaged 11.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game in one season at UNLV, but was ruled ineligible for his final three games because of an issue with his high school ACT. He turned pro and went undrafted in June 2016. With Williams gone, Jones and guard … [Read more...] about Heat signs former NBA slam dunk contest runner-up to two-way contract

He beat out Houston’s Chase Budinger, Indiana’s Paul George and Minnesota’s Derrick Williams for the Jazz’s first-ever trophy in the contest. ORLANDO — It wasn’t Iman Shumpert jumping over Jeremy Lin on a couch, but Jeremy Evans’ dunk was still pretty impressive. The Utah Jazz’s second-year forward captured the Sprite Slam Dunk Contest Saturday night, managing to jump over a teammate sitting on a chair and dunking two balls at once. Later, Evans donned a Karl Malone jersey and jumped over diminutive actor Kevin Hart, who was dressed as a mailman, for another dunk. PHOTOS: 2012 NBA ALL-STAR WEEKEND AT AMWAY CENTER IN ORLANDO, FLA. Of course, no one would have ever heard of Evans had it not been for Shumpert, the Knicks’ rookie, being forced to pull out of the competition with a knee injury. Evans got the call three days ago and the 6-9, 2010 second-round pick out of Western Kentucky made the most of it. Most if not all of the dunks were produced and in some cases scripted by the NBA and TNT, which made for a cleaner and in many ways more entertaining event. Houston’s Chase … [Read more...] about Filling in for NY Knicks’ injured Iman Shumpert, Utah Jazz forward Jeremy Evans wins slam dunk contest on All-Star Weekend
