Black Girls Code, an Oakland organization that works to bring computer science education to African American girls through workshops and camps, said it got a $125,000 grant offer from Uber last year — and turned it down. It came at a time when the ride-hailing company was facing backlash from former engineer Susan Fowler’s allegations that the company had a culture of sexual harassment. It “seems a bit tone-deaf to really addressing real change in how they are moving towards both inclusion and equity,” Kimberly Bryant, the company’s founder, told TechCrunch at the time. Now, almost a year later, another tech company is offering double the amount to Bryant’s organization. She said yes. “It’s about being able to partner with an organization that has a strong brand and presence as a thought leader in the IT and tech space,” Bryant said. Microsoft, in Redmond, Wash., put $250,000 into a partnership that will support the nonprofit. The … [Read more...] about Black Girls Code says yes to Microsoft, plus Slack and Lantern
“There is a whole other element of language that is felt when it is heard.” These are the words of Alexandra Lindberg, a slam poet invited to present at the Utah Arts Festival. They fell in love with slam poetry a little over a year ago when they started writing about a breakup. From there they found a “landscape of art” which “[gave] back to [them] time and time again in ways that are unimaginable.” Unfortunately, their experience at the Utah Arts Festival was not a part of this beautiful landscape, but a disappointing lesson in censorship and lack of courtesy. This year’s arts fest showed poets just how little they are worth in the eyes of many. The festival cut their mics without warning, paid black poets less, misgendered and allowed audience heckling of poets. One of these poets, according to The Salt Lake Tribune, found himself facing event security despite winning an award for his work. The Utah Arts Festival did not respond to requests … [Read more...] about Slack: Utah Arts Fest, a Machine of the Oppressed
Published 7:04 am CDT, Wednesday, August 1, 2018 SMITHFIELD, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island officials are warning people to stay clear of the Slack Reservoir because of a potentially dangerous blue-green algae bloom. The state departments of health and environmental management say all recreation such as swimming, fishing and boating should be avoided until further notice. The reservoir spans the Smithfield and Johnston town line. High levels of the toxins were found in water samples taken from the area known as "Little Beach." Officials say the blue-green algae can produce toxins that are harmful to humans and animals. Contact with the skin can cause irritation to nose, eyes and throat. Swallowing water containing the algae can cause stomach discomfort and, in rare cases, more serious health problems including fever, dizziness and nervous system damage. … [Read more...] about Slack reservoir off limits due to blue-green algae bloom

Here's what people said (we allow anonymous comments in this case to encourage frank answers from people closely involved in the political process): Democrat: Trump has definitely hurt the brand among persuadable voters. That said, his base loves what he's doing and Democrats have done a terrible job of organizing opposition to even his worst policies Democrat: Done very serious damage.
