Tiger Woods' victory at the Masters golf tournament on Sunday, his first major victory since 2008, is expected to lift sales for sponsors, broadcasters and golf courses lucky enough to host a tournament with Woods playing. The competition put the 43-year-old back on top of a sport he helped transform 25 years ago. "Tiger sells golf," says Eric Smallwood, president of Apex Marketing Group, a Michigan analytics firm. Apex found that Nike earned $22.5 million worth of brand exposure just from Woods' final round, with Nike's "Swoosh" logo splashed on his hat, shirt, pants and shoes. Nike stock was up about one percent on Monday. Tournament broadcaster CBS Corp saw a ratings bump. Based on preliminary data, the final round of Sunday's tournament was the highest-rated morning golf broadcast since 1986, when CBS started collecting that data. The tournament, which is usually broadcast in the afternoon, was rescheduled to the morning because of weather. CBS has the rights to the PGA … [Read more...] about Tiger Woods’ Victory in Masters a Win for Golf Business

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – Tiger Woods is at the beginning of a long road to recovery after the golfing legend suffered major leg injuries during a rollover crash Tuesday morning. Even on a day when COVID-19 deaths continued to climb beyond a half-million Americans and when Congress held hearings about what went wrong in the fatal Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, the public's fascination with all things celebrity once again ruled the airwaves. The NRA filed a counter lawsuit against James in the New York State Supreme Court on Tuesday accusing James of seeking to dissolve the group for political purposes. The counter complaint was first reported by Reuters . “Even before assuming office, and without a shred of evidence that the NRA had done anything wrong, Attorney General James vowed to weaponize the supervisory powers of the NYAG to destroy one of the nation’s oldest, largest civil rights organizations,” the complaint reads. ADVERTISEMENT “Her impetus was nakedly political: to weaken the NRA as a political force in advance of the 2020 elections,” the complaint says. James sued in August 2020 to dissolve the gun rights group after an 18-month investigation found that the group and some of its officials diverted millions of dollars … [Read more...] about NRA accuses New York attorney general of ‘weaponizing’ power in new lawsuit
