WASHINGTON - Medicare officials said Wednesday that the program will pay the $93,000 cost of prostate cancer drug Provenge, an innovative therapy that gives men suffering from the disease an extra four months to live, on average. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid said the biotech drug made by Dendreon Corp. is a "reasonable and necessary" medicine. The decision ensures that thousands of men will be able to receive the drug through the federal government. The agency will take comments on the decision for 90 days before making it final. Medicare is legally prohibited from considering price when deciding whether to pay for a new treatment. The Food and Drug Administration approved Provenge last April and in most cases Medicare automatically covers drugs cleared by the agency. But Provenge's price tag has prompted debate about the cost of medical care and the government's role in paying for it. The agency's decision to review Provenge last year prompted outrage from some patients and … [Read more...] about CBS News Logo Medicare to pay for $93,000 prostate cancer drug
(CBS) There's still no cure for prostate cancer, but scientists may be closing in on one. They say they've developed a vaccine that destroys even advanced prostate tumors without any side effects. For now, the vaccine has proven to work only in mice. But the scientists - from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minn. and at the University of Leeds in England - hope the treatment can one day work in humans. "So far it looks safe, and if it continues to look safe, there's nothing we wouldn't rule out," Dr. Alan Melcher, study co-author and professor of clinical oncology at the University of Leeds, told the Daily Mail.By using DNA from healthy prostate cells, the researchers created a vaccine that tricks the immune system to think existing tumors are antigens - like an invading flu virus, for example - thus triggering its antibodies to destroy the tumors. In mice, 80 percent of prostate cancer cells were destroyed without harming healthy tissue, the Daily Mail reported. The findings were … [Read more...] about CBS News Logo Prostate cancer cured in mice: Are humans next?

O'Neal's announcement was followed on Monday by famed investor and business magnate Warren Buffet's disclosure that he was suffering from stage 1 prostate cancer, CBS News Moneywatch reported. In a letter to investors, Buffett said he received his diagnosis last Wednesday after undergoing a PSA test and biopsy, and will undergo a two-month treatment of daily radiation starting mid-July. "I will let shareholders know immediately should my health situation change. Eventually, of course, it will; but I believe that day is a long way off," he wrote. But detected early enough, and with the right treatment, the disease can be survivable. The question is: What is the right treatment? Doctors say there is no one right answer to that extremely important question. It all depends on a variety of factors, including the patient's own body. Standard treatments include hormone therapy, radiation and surgery, but thousands of men are now also trying Chinese herbal medicine. CBS News Correspondent Thalia Assuras reports the combination of eight Chinese herbs, including saw palmetto, is known as PC-SPES. That's "PC," for prostate cancer, and "SPES," the Latin word for "hope." University of California at San Francisco cancer researcher Dr. Eric Small, one of the authors of a study on PC-SPES, says the herbs helped more than half of a group of patients whose illness had progressed to the point that they could not be helped by hormone therapy. Some patients turn to PC-SPES when other therapies have failed. That was the case for Bob Timoney, who … [Read more...] about CBS News Logo Herbal Therapy And Prostate Cancer
