Sicily Offers 422 Migrants Safe Port Before Storm

MARSEILLE, FRANCE - A vessel carrying 422 migrants rescued off the coast of Libya has been given permission to dock in Italy after issuing an urgent appeal for shelter from a looming storm, its operator said Sunday. The SOS Mediterranee group, which operates the Ocean Viking rescue ship, said it had received the green light to bring the migrants ashore in the Sicilian port of Augusta after several earlier appeals went unheeded. It said it expected the vessel to arrive in Sicily on Sunday evening. The French-based group said its passengers included babies, children, pregnant women and unaccompanied minors. "They must urgently be disembarked in a safe port," Luisa Albera, the head of the group's rescue operations, had earlier urged, warning that weather conditions in the central Mediterranean were deteriorating. She described the health of several of the migrants as fragile. Eight tested positive for COVID-19 and were isolating aboard the ship, she added. Libya has become a key jumping … [Read more...] about Sicily Offers 422 Migrants Safe Port Before Storm

Make the Meatball Sliders that Conquered New York

Growing up in Philadelphia, chef Joey Campanaro often could be found in the kitchen of his grandmother’s house next door. “I grew up with a big family in South Philly, which is a very blue collar hustle and do what you got do kind of town,” says Campanaro, whose father was a fireman and whose mother worked for the school district. “It was always like, ‘go to your grandma’s house and hang out there.’ Usually, she’d be making pasta. I really loved it.” All these years later, the recipes he learned while keeping his grandmother company are the foundation of his cooking philosophy at his New York restaurant the Little Owl. It’s also what inspired his cookbook Big Love Cooking. “She lived through the depression and she was the oldest of five kids,” says Campanaro, who also co-owns Manhattan restaurants Market Table and The Clam. “There were really tough times, but when it comes to cooking, that was when she was … [Read more...] about Make the Meatball Sliders that Conquered New York

Five Veterans in Five Months: Non-Profit HunterSeven Hopes to Prevent More Deaths from Military Toxic Exposure

Five veterans have died in the last five months. Their deaths were not from exposure to the coronavirus that’s transfixed national attention over the past year. They were from suspected exposure to toxins during their military service. The first was 31-year-old Air Force Special Operations veteran Luke Page (pictured top). He deployed overseas eight times. After he separated from the Air Force in 2019, he was diagnosed with one of the rarest forms of lymphoma. It had spread throughout his entire system, leaving him covered with tumors from head to toe. Page died on October 27. He left behind a wife, Haley, and a young son, Branson. Next was 42-year-old Army and Coast Guard veteran Stephen Shull (pictured below, right). He had deployed twice to combat zones. After leaving the Army, he became a deputy sheriff pilot with the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office. In 2016 he was diagnosed with an advanced stage of lung cancer.
