Perkins is self-described as non-binary, which is defined by Merriam-Webster as “being a person who identifies with or expresses a gender identity that is neither entirely male nor entirely female.” Regardless of gender identity, it was Perkins’ artistic identity that shone through, earning the honor of Orange County Register’s Artist of the Year for 2D Visual Arts. The only semifinalist in the computer drawing and painting specialty who showed up for the interview, Perkins also led a field of 14 artists in four categories. We received 113 nominations from teachers and private instructors at Orange County high schools and arts organizations. This arts discipline has been divided into five specialties: 2D mixed media, computer drawing and painting, graphic design, hand drawing and painting, and photography. The semi-finalists in each specialty will be chosen by a panel of visual arts teachers. The nominees are listed with an endorsement from their nominating teacher and a link to the student’s work. Fox News commentator Stephen Miller likened it to "drunk teenagers playing seven minutes of heaven." But experts say an assault like the one described by Christine Blasey Ford falls clearly outside the lines of behavior that can be written off as a youthful indiscretion.
