Capitol Watch: Budget countdown begins, Molinaro sets a date

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — In New York state government news, lawmakers are buckling down for their annual budget negotiations ahead of an April 1 deadline and Republican Marc Molinaro has set a date to announce his candidacy for governor. A look at stories making news: ___ BUDGET BREWING The next two weeks are likely to be some of the busiest of the year as lawmakers and Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo work to pass a new state budget before the April 1 deadline. On Wednesday, the Assembly and Senate each passed their own separate budget recommendations which will serve as the basis for negotiations between legislative leaders and Cuomo. In most years, the last two weeks of March are a scramble as lawmakers and the governor work to hammer out a budget deal before the deadline. Sometimes they succeed, and sometimes the budget is late. This year's schedule is more complicated due to the Jewish Passover and Christian Easter holidays. April 1 falls on Easter Sunday, with Good Friday and the start of Passover two days earlier. Top lawmakers say they'll try to finish the budget early to make sure legislators and their staffs are home for the holidays. "Deadlines are something we always deal with it here," Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, D-Bronx, said. "I'm not concerned that we have two less days." The sticking points in this year's budget include education spending, money for New York City subways and Cuomo's call for new tolls in Manhattan. Republicans in the Senate want to include new school safety measures, while Democrats in the Assembly are calling for the Dream Act, which would extend financial aid to students who entered the country illegally as children, and the Child Victims Act, which would extend the statute of limitations to give molestation victims more time to sue their abusers. "Let the games begin," said Senate Leader John Flanagan, R-Long Island. "There is no reason in the world to not have an on-time budget." ___ MOLINARO SETS A Continue Reading

Cher musical sets a date for Broadway

“Believe” it when Cher says it. “The Cher Show,” the musical based on the legendary pop diva’s life, will arrive on Broadway next year, just as she promised on social media three months ago. “It’ll (be) on Broadway 2018,” Cher tweeted about the biomusical that will tell her story and weave together dozens of her hit songs. Producers echoed that statement on Thursday, announcing that the new musical based on the life and six-decade career of the iconic singer and actress will have its pre-Broadway world premiere in Chicago next year. Previews begin on June 12 at the Oriental Theatre. The show will open on Broadway at the Neil Simon Theatre in Fall 2018. “My life as a musical on Broadway. It seems crazy, exciting and bizarre — but that’s probably how my life seems to most people," Cher said in a statement. Cher’s life is so big that three actresses will reportedly portray her at various points along the way. Look for other characters, including Cher’s parents, Bob Mackie, David Geffen, Gregg Allman, Robert Altman, Rob Camilletti and Sigmund Freud. “The Cher Show” creative team includes writer Rick Elice (“Jersey Boys”), choreographer Christopher Gattelli (“Newsies”) and director Jason Moore (“Pitch Perfect”). Additional casting and more details will become available on “The Cher Show” official site, where it now simply says, “Ok, b-----s. Let’s do this. Chicago | June 2018 Broadway | Fall 2018” Continue Reading

Pippa Middleton sets wedding date and other details about her ceremony

It’s Pippa’s turn! The world first became enamored with the younger sister of Duchess Kate Middleton during the 2011 Royal Wedding, where she wore what is likely the most iconic bridesmaid’s dress ever — and now the brunette beauty has set a date for her own impending nuptials. A source told Us Weekly the younger Middleton intends to marry her hedge fund manager fiancé, James Matthews, on May 20, 2017 at the St. Mark’s Englefield in Berkshire — and they’ve already sent out their save the dates! “Princess Charlotte is going to be one of the flower girls. They’re planning for Prince George to be a page boy,” the insider told the magazine, noting that while Kate won’t be a bridesmaid, she’ll likely perform a reading during the ceremony. The reception will take place at the home of Middleton’s parents, Carole and Michael, in Brickleberry. The party will take place within a luxury marquee in their garden, though the entire property will be open to wedding guests, the source told the magazine. Back in November, Giles Deacon was reportedly spotted arriving at the bride-to-be’s home armed with several garment bags, prompting immediate speculation that the British fashion designer would have a hand in the wedding dress. Middleton in September was also spotted checking out bridal bouquets and floral arrangements for her big day. “Pippa has a specific vision and feels she’s learned enough about planning to get stuck into it herself rather than handing it all over to a planner,” the insider said. “She doesn’t want it to be too expensive or look gaudy. Classic and elegant are two of the words she used to describe it.” Continue Reading

United Kingdom sets a date to vote on future with European Union

It's been three years in the making, but a June 23 date has finally been set for the momentous “in or out” British vote on whether to abandon the 28-nation European Union. Prime Minister David Cameron vowed Saturday to lead the charge to keep Britain part of the EU, winning the backing of most of his cabinet and support for his “stay in” goal from political heavyweights in rival parties, including the opposition Labour Party and the Scottish National Party. Cameron said he has concluded Britain would be safer and stronger remaining in the bloc, and that jobs would be created by maintaining open trading ties with Europe. Continue Reading

Looking for a date? This is when you should use Tinder, OkCupid

If you're looking to swipe right and score a date, try using dating apps at night. The best time to find potential dates on Tinder and OkCupid is at 9 p.m., according to new Nielsen research. Nielsen said users on both apps tend to be most active, and elicit the most responses in the evening. The data provided by Nielsen suggests most online daters use the services in the morning once they wake up and before going to bed. "When we look at unique audience we see that a larger percentage of all OKC users sign in both in the morning and night," said a Nielsen statement. "On Tinder, the user's likelihood to check in between noon and midnight is mostly flat at about 40%." Those looking for late-night hookups might not be so lucky after 10 p.m., though. Activity on both dating apps tends to significantly drop at night, only to pick right back up between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. Activity during the day seems to be constant. Valentine's Day is right around the corner, so if you want to match and set a date, now you know when to get swiping. Tinder also recently added GIF support to spice up conversations and help break the ice when you first match. Continue Reading

Oregon couple set wedding date two years after proposal video that went viral

It's taken the couple that got engaged in a viral online video two years to set a date for their wedding. Isaac Lamb proposed to Amy Frankel on May 23, 2012, in an obnoxiously adorable video recorded in Portland that encompassed an army of friends and family for a live lip-dub to Bruno Mars' "Marry Me." But wedding bells have yet to ring for the couple. That's about to change Aug. 31, when Lamb and Frankel exchange vows during a barn wedding on a Canby, Ore., farm, the Oregonian reported, because they didn't want a "corporate wedding." The pair chose to wait for Frankel to wrap up nursing school before they tied the knot, Lamb told the newspaper. The wedding is going to be huge because they have big families and several friends who appeared in the 6-minute video to invite, he said. They even sent an invitation to Bruno Mars via Twitter, who apparently loved the clip and wrote: "I don't think I could've made a better music video for this song." The musician hasn't replied to their invite, Lamb added. More than 26 million people have watched the incredibly elaborate video on YouTube since its release. It claimed to be the first live lip-dub proposal. Follow me on Twitter: @nkhensley Join the Conversation: Continue Reading

Jennifer Aniston, Justin Theroux set a date for their wedding: report

The wedding countdown begins for Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux. The 44-year-old actress, who stunned at Sunday's Academy Awards with her fiancé by her side, is going to be a blushing bride sooner than later, according to People magazine. "She has already checked off some major tasks on her to-do list, including choosing wedding bands, setting a date and narrowing down dresses," says the weekly mag. Unlike Aniston's $1 million wedding to Brad Pitt, this time around "it will be a small affair with their closest friends," a source close to the actress tells People. Sounds like things couldn't be going any better for the duo, who are about to tie the knot. "Jen seems more confident than ever," adds the source, "and they've become a great team." Playmate Kendra Wilkinson has set a date to walk down the aisle. Hugh Hefner’s ex-gal pal will marry NFL player Hank Baskett on June 27, 2009 at the Playboy Mansion, reports. The "Girl Next Door" star, 23, only recently moved out of the Mansion after ending her relationship with Hefner, 82. She says she planned the wedding date around Baskett’s football season with the Philadephia Eagles. "I'm waiting for him to come out here and help me plan … I'm ready to just get married," she said. Initial reports stated that Hef would escort Wilkinson down the aisle, which the Playboy mogul said he’d be happy to do. "I have given her my blessing and will be giving her away at a very special wedding ceremony at the Playboy Mansion," he said in November. But now Wilkinson may be having second thoughts about an ex-beau handing her off to her husband-to-be. "I think so, but I don’t know yet," she said of the plan.
