Romney-Cotton, a Cancun cabbie and the minimum wage debate
Several years ago, while attending a gathering of economists in Cancun, Mexico, I decided to hire a cab for a tour of the area during an afternoon break. After jumping in, I asked the driver to take me to the center of town, away from the resort-stuffed beach area and, along the way, to tell me about the local economy, where people live and shop, and what they do for a living. However, even as the coronavirus continues to ravage communities across the country, another public health crisis is still devastating American families: our nation’s fatal addiction to opioids. In 2019, nearly 50,000 Americans lost their lives to an opioid overdose — a 136 percent increase just since 2010. There’s alarming new evidence that overdose rates have jumped even further since the March 2020 COVID-19 emergency declaration. According to the most recent available data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), both April and May saw the largest monthly increases in opioid deaths on record. It’s easy to understand how the stress, dislocation and uncertainty caused by the pandemic would be devastating for those suffering from substance use disorders. People across the country are in pain and too many are dying. … [Read more...] about X the X-Waiver: How Congress can facilitate treatment for opioid abuse
Twitter removes hundred of accounts tied to Iran, Russia
Twitter announced on Wednesday that it had removed hundreds of accounts linked to Iran, Russia and Armenia for violating its platform manipulation policies. In a blog post, the social media giant said the accounts, which were permanently suspended, attempted to interfere with the 2020 presidential election and in some cases posed as government officials. The social platform suspended a total of 238 accounts linked to Iran, 35 accounts with ties to the Armenian government and 100 accounts connected to Russia, the blog post says. ADVERTISEMENT Twitter's platform manipulation policy says users "may not use Twitter’s services in a manner intended to artificially amplify or suppress information or engage in behavior that manipulates or disrupts people’s experience on Twitter." Accounts connected to Iran, many of which Twitter described as having "low engagement and did not make an impact on the public conversation," and "attempting to disrupt the public conversation during … [Read more...] about Twitter removes hundred of accounts tied to Iran, Russia
