close Video Prosecutors in Australia accuse 19-year-old volunteer firefighter of starting at least seven wildfires Six people have died and over 650 homes have been lost as fires ravaged the east coast of Australia; Benjamin Hall reports. A thick haze from raging wildfires in Australia engulfed Sydney on Tuesday, creating dangerous air conditions and smoke so thick it was enough to trigger fire alarms in buildings across the city. The winds on Tuesday from the north pushed smoke into the city, causing a haze that was so thick in some places it was 11 times worse than the air quality level considered “hazardous." Thomas Costa, assistant secretary of Unions New South Wales, said that due to the dire air quality, workers should not be forced to work on outdoor job sites as long as the haze sticks around. "Toxicity is very, very high," Costa told reporters. SACRAMENTO — Privately Run Prison Planned for Mojave / Firm says it can house inmates cheaper
1997-08-01 04:00:00 PDT Sacramento -- One of the country's largest firms that privately builds and runs prisons announced plans yesterday for a new, 2,000-bed facility in the Mojave Desert, with no guarantee that the state will send convicts to the lockup. But David Myers, president of the Corrections Corporation of America, expressed confidence that the facility will not lack occupants, because California prisons already are bulging with 152,000 convicts -- nearly double their designed capacity. "They'll avail themselves of it," drawled Myers, a former warden in Texas. Myers, officials from California City (population 8,000) and state Senator Richard Polanco, D-Los Angeles, held a Capitol news conference to announce the plan to open the $80 million to $100 million prison within two years. "If we build it, they will come," predicted Polanco, chairman of the Joint Committee on Prison Construction and Operations, and a supporter of the private effort.
