6 Aaron Rodgers says he doesn’t want to be part of a rebuilding project. Apparently, neither does his current coach. “There’s no plan for a rebuild,” Packers coach Matt LaFleur said Monday, two days after the Packers’ season ended with a 13-10 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. “You get this close, obviously win a lot of football games, and we know in order for there not to be that, he’s got to be a part of this thing. I don’t think that’s anybody’s intention.” The Packers are about $40 million over the salary cap according to overthecap.com and have plenty of players whose contracts are expiring, including two-time All-Pro receiver Davante Adams. That could impact whether the 38-year-old Rodgers is back in Green Bay, where the 2005 first-round pick has spent his entire career. Rodgers said after the 49ers game that he doesn't want to be part of a rebuild. “There’s obviously a lot of decisions to be made,” the quarterback … [Read more...] about Packers’ pitch to Rodgers: ‘There’s no plans for a rebuild’
Photo: Kim Raff In the summer of 2019, Connor Pardoe was trying to persuade Life Time, Inc., a health-club chain and the largest private operator of tennis courts in the U.S., to embrace a different game. Pardoe, then 26, was peddling pickleball: a racquet sport similar to tennis but played on a much smaller surface, over a slightly lower net, with a squarish paddle and a perforated plastic ball . The year before, Pardoe had left his family’s real-estate business to build the Professional Pickleball Association . As he hunted for tournament venues, he went straight for the flashiest sites in pro tennis. “We started big, reaching out to the Miami Open, the Lindner Family Tennis Center, where they play Western & Southern. A lot of those guys weren’t too interested,” he says. After all, for most of its 60-year history, pickleball was the domain of senior citizens too achy in the joints to scramble around full-size tennis courts. “We were on our hands and knees, begging … [Read more...] about Is the Next Great Pastime … Pickleball?
Karla Cornejo Villavicencio never wanted to do something as clichéd as writing about immigration. But when she was a senior at Harvard University, she wrote an anonymous essay for The Daily Beast about being undocumented. Soon literary agents were asking for a memoir. “I was really offended by that,” Cornejo Villavicencio, now 31, said, “because it wasn’t about my writing. I knew that’s not why they were reaching out.” It wasn’t until the day after the 2016 election, feeling shellshocked by the results, that she felt ready. She had to do something , she thought, to give voice to the millions of people living in the country illegally who, like her, feared what might happen to them under a Donald Trump presidency. The result was “ The Undocumented Americans ,” published in March, in which Cornejo Villavicencio chronicles her own immigration story and profiles undocumented immigrants across the United States: the trauma of those recruited to clean up ground zero; the … [Read more...] about ‘I Came From Nothing’: An Undocumented Writer Defies the Odds
8 When Beijing was awarded the 2008 Summer Olympics, the International Olympic Committee predicted the Games could improve human rights, and Chinese politicians hinted at the same. Such talk is all but absent this time as the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics open in just over a week. The Games are a reminder of both China’s rise and its disregard for civil liberties, which has prompted a diplomatic boycott led by the U.S. Rights groups have documented forced labor, mass detentions and torture, and the U.S. has called China’s internment of at least 1 million Uyghurs genocide. China has also come under criticism over the near-disappearance from public view of tennis star Peng Shuai after she accused a former senior member of the ruling Communist Party of sexually assaulting her. But with more political, economic and military clout than it had 13 1/2 years ago, China appears to be worrying less about global scrutiny this … [Read more...] about China less worried about global criticism these Olympics

There’s a story that progressives like to tell about Larry Summers. The doyen of Establishment economics is dining out with a populist politician. The two have made it through the meal with minimal awkwardness — their ideological tensions eased by booze and food — when Summers leans back in his chair and offers his left-wing foil a hard-won insight. There are two kinds of political actors in this world: insiders and outsiders. Outsiders are free to speak their truth, Summers explains. But the price of such freedom is irrelevance in the halls of power. Insiders, by contrast, have a seat at the table where history is made. But to keep those seats, they must take care not to criticize other insiders. So, Summers asks his dining companion, which are you? The anecdote has an apocryphal air. It makes Summers sound like … [Read more...] about Was Larry Summers Right All Along?

Kids & Family Saint Paul-based company, IC System, uses it's five core values to reach the community and build unity amongst their employees. Jerry Paulus , Neighbor Posted Reply A company's philosophy is more than just a collection of words that hangs on a plaque in an office building. For the rare organization that truly embodies the values espoused in its philosophy, it can be a collection of ideas that permeate every aspect of the business. When a firm strives towards ideals in this way, it can not only achieve its highest level of productivity and ability to serve customers, but it can also accomplish something more than its commercial goals. It can serve as an institution that brings people together, acts as a role model, and gives back to its community. To see the manner in which a company can embody these lofty ideals, we've taken … [Read more...] about IC System Builds Integrity in Variety of Ways

DUBLIN — It was a true Irish honeymoon — short and judgmental. The Irish did not waste any time basking in the wonder of the world, that this small country had leapt into modernity with its first openly gay and half-Indian prime minister, at 38 the youngest taoiseach in history. This, even as America and Britain are getting borne back into a crimped, parochial past by unpopular elders riding a wave of white-privilege nostalgia and anti-immigrant fever. It only took three months for Leo Varadkar, a 6-foot-3 physician who is the youngest child of a Hindu Indian doctor and a Catholic Irish nurse, to be sliced down to size, which, along with hurling, is a beloved Gaelic sport. “If we could export wing-clippers, we could solve the national debt,” Ryan Tubridy, the country’s most popular TV host, dryly told me. The tall new Irish prime minister has run afoul of the Irish tall poppy syndrome, the need to cut down all perceived peacocking. “I’ve got a beating in the last week … [Read more...] about Move Over DiCaprio and da Vinci — Here’s Ireland’s Leo
Kate Upton has given a detailed account of the sexual harassment she alleges she endured at the hands of Paul Marciano, the creative director and co-founder of Guess? Inc. In a frank interview with Time , Upton said she was grabbed, groped, and verbally intimidated by Marciano, who, she claims, called her a “fat pig.” Marciano vigorously denied the allegations to Time , saying: “I have never been alone with Kate Upton. I have never touched her inappropriately. Nor would I ever refer to a Guess model in such a derogatory manner.” Marciano’s denial is odd, however, as Upton does not claim in her account that the abuse happened when they were alone, and Time reports that photographer Yu Tsai told them he witnessed the harassment Upton describes. The controversy now swirling around Marciano began when Upton tweeted a message about Marciano accompanied by the #MeToo: Upton was criticized in some quarters for not providing more details of the allegation—but she … [Read more...] about Kate Upton Details Harassment by Paul Marciano of Guess: He ‘Forcibly Grabbed My Breasts’
