Opinion: What a Nobel laureate’s take on Donald Trump reveals about today
Sign up to get this weekly column as a newsletter. We're looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. (CNN) Shortly after Donald Trump was elected President of the United States, Nobel laureate Toni Morrison wrote in The New Yorker: "Unlike any nation in Europe, the United States holds whiteness as the unifying force. Here, for many people, the definition of 'Americanness' is color." Reflecting on efforts -- largely by White men -- to define themselves by sustaining that poisonous definition, Morrison argues that those "who are prepared to abandon their humanity out of fear of black men and women, suggest the true horror of lost status." In Morrison's formulation, fear-driven devotion to racial status is more powerful to many White Americans than even self-interest, shame or any belief in humanity. And it is this reality, that White Americans' anxieties in the face of a changing country have been and continue to be … [Read more...] about Opinion: What a Nobel laureate’s take on Donald Trump reveals about today
Man City wins 6th EPL title in 11 seasons in dramatic finale
By ROB HARRIS MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Three goals in five minutes turned around Manchester City’s season finale as Pep Guardiola’s team clinched a sixth Premier League title in 11 seasons, rallying to beat Aston Villa 3-2 and hold off Liverpool’s challenge on Sunday. After starting the day in first place, City was at risk of a historic choke when it conceded twice to trail 2-0 at home to Villa. İlkay Gündoğan’s header began the comeback in the 76th minute and Rodri equalized two minutes later by placing the ball through a tight gap into the bottom corner. The Etihad Stadium erupted in celebrations in the 81st when Gündoğan tapped in Kevin De Bruyne’s cross. “It was an unbelievable game,” Gündoğan said. “We are human beings and, after going 2-0 down, the chances were just very, very small. But we had to do the simple things and scoring two goals quickly and then having 10 minutes to score the third one gave us the right lift.” The importance of that goal became clearer … [Read more...] about Man City wins 6th EPL title in 11 seasons in dramatic finale
Welcome to the Fifth COVID Wave
Photo: Spencer Platt/Getty Images A fifth COVID wave, fueled by more-transmissible BA.2.12.1 and BA.2 subvariants of the Omicron strain, is definitely now underway in the United States. CDC data indicates that at least 86 percent of Americans now live in communities where there is a high risk of COVID transmission, up from 72 percent the previous week, and 57 percent the week before that. At least 95 percent of Americans now live in areas where there is substantial risk of transmission; only 1 percent live in communities where there is low risk. But this wave of new infections is also significantly larger than official case counts suggest, since many cases are either being detected using at-home tests that are never reported, or are asymptomatic and/or not being detected at all. As the Washington Post pointed out last week , nobody actually knows how big this new COVID wave actually is right now, noting that COVID experts suspect the number of new cases in communities … [Read more...] about Welcome to the Fifth COVID Wave
