New York (CNN Business) Have you ever stepped into an Abercrombie, Victoria's Secret, Vitamin Shoppe or another store and wondered: "What's that smell?" Scent is a subtle, often underrated, component of companies' attempts to entice customers and get them to linger around longer. These retail chains and other companies, including restaurants, fast-food chains, airlines, and hotels have put a lot of effort (and smelling tests) into perfecting their signature aromas. Most retailers' marketing tactics target our vision -- think logos, commercials and other symbols. Brands also try to stimulate us with upbeat music or relaxing sounds. Victoria's Secret and other chains spend a lot of time thinking about how they smell. But targeting our noses can be an even more powerful tool for brands, say marketing gurus. An entire industry , known as scent marketing or olfactory branding, is dedicated to developing custom fragrances. … [Read more...] about How Abercrombie, Victoria’s Secret and Vitamin Shoppe use smell to get you to spend more

FBI seized top secret documents in Trump estate search
WASHINGTON (AP) — The FBI recovered “top secret” and even more sensitive documents from former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, according to court papers released Friday after a federal judge unsealed the warrant that authorized the sudden, unprecedented search this week. A property receipt unsealed by the court shows FBI agents took 11 sets of classified records from the estate during a search on Monday. The seized records include some marked not only top secret but also “sensitive compartmented information,” a special category meant to protect the nation's most important secrets that if revealed publicly could cause “exceptionally grave” damage to U.S. interests. The court records did not provide specific details about information the documents might contain. The warrant says federal agents were investigating potential violations of three different federal laws, including one that governs gathering, transmitting or losing defense information under the … [Read more...] about FBI seized top secret documents in Trump estate search
Top-Secret Documents Found at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago: Everything We’ve Learned
Photo: Brandon Bell/Getty Images Less than a week after the FBI searched Donald Trump ’s Mar-a-Lago home, it was revealed that federal agents were investigating potential violations of the Espionage Act and that they’d found multiple top-secret documents. On Friday, the warrant used for the search was unsealed after Attorney General Merrick Garland announced a day earlier that the Justice Department had filed a motion in court to do so. Trump’s attorneys did not object, though they declined to share the warrant themselves after they were provided with a copy and a receipt of seized items following the search on Monday. Meanwhile, Trump railed against the FBI and Justice Department for their actions as did Republicans in Congress. Here’s what we’ve learned so far about the investigation of the former president. The search was related to potential violations of three laws, including the Espionage Act: One of the laws concerns the “concealment, removal or mutilation” of … [Read more...] about Top-Secret Documents Found at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago: Everything We’ve Learned
Inside the Vault: A Former Bank in Vermont Transformed Into a Whimsical Gallery and Home
A magnificent home that's currently on the market was originally a bank , and it features original neoclassical details and an interactive vault space. Listed for $765,000, the 6,650-square-foot former Vermont Federal Bank on Main Street in downtown Bennington, VT , has served as Joel Lentzner 's home for many years. “It’s got a tremendous amount of history, and it’s at the center of our downtown,” Lentzner says. “I’m proud of how we’ve taken great effort to preserve the architectural details that are there—instead of just gutting it and making it a new space.” The original details include brass tear gas canisters (which were for protection and are now empty), beaded glass, marble counters, chandeliers, and clocks. “Preserving it was a big part of what we wanted to do," Lentzner says. "We'd love to see that continue with whoever buys it next.” Lentzner bought the property in 1999 and spent the next three years converting the lower level into a 3,700-square-foot … [Read more...] about Inside the Vault: A Former Bank in Vermont Transformed Into a Whimsical Gallery and Home

Trump Warrant Suggests Espionage Act; Same Law Hillary Clinton Dodged
The search warrant for the raid on former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home on Monday suggests he is being investigated under the Espionage Act of 1917 — the same law that Hillary Clinton was suspected of violating in 2016. Attorney General Merrick Garland admitted Thursday that he personally approved the warrant application, which seeks broad discretion to search Trump’s home based on three statutes: 18 U.S.C. section 793, on the mishandling of defense information; 18 U.S.C. section 1519, relating to the destruction of federal documents; and 18 U.S.C. section 2071, which punishes hiding, moving, or destroying federal documents. Section 793 is from the Espionage Act of 1917, passed during the First World War. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was suspected of violating the latter when she used an unsecured private email server in her own home to handle her communications, including emails with classified information, during her time in office. The relevant part … [Read more...] about Trump Warrant Suggests Espionage Act; Same Law Hillary Clinton Dodged
Albuquerque Suspect Allegedly Abused His Family for Years
Even as police offered new details into the execution-style slayings of at least two Muslim men in Albuquerque, the long, sprawling record of alleged violence by the chief suspect in the murders came into focus. Among the wild array of arrests for battery and domestic violence detailed in court records obtained by The Daily Beast against Muhammad Syed, the 51-year-old has allegedly threatened to kill his daughter’s boyfriend, beat his wife in a state building, lacerated his son’s head with a metal spoon, kicked a Walmart employee, and punished his daughter after she refused to take her brother to college with her as an escort. But despite the alleged years-long abuse, Syed never faced charges, in part, because his family always seemed to downplay the incident once police arrived at the scene. On multiple occasions, police officers had difficulty taking reports because the family said they did not speak English, and required the help of a telephone translation service in their … [Read more...] about Albuquerque Suspect Allegedly Abused His Family for Years
What Happened to the House of Horrors at the Center of Netflix’s ‘I Just Killed My Dad’ Documentary?
Seventeen-year-old Anthony Templet shocked the nation when he shot his father three times in their Louisiana home. However, the dark secrets that would soon emerge would be even more disturbing. The 2019 murder is the subject of a three-part, Netflix documentary, " I Just Killed My Dad ," which premieres on Tuesday. At the center of the crime is the unassuming four-bedroom, three-bathroom house in a quiet Baton Rouge, LA , neighborhood where Anthony alleges years of abuse and isolation occurred before the situation erupted violently. On June 3, 2019, Anthony said he was sleeping in his room in the house when his father, who was drunk, woke him up around 3 a.m. Burt Templet was going through Anthony's cellphone to see if his son had been communicating with Burt's estranged wife. (She had taken out a 55-page restraining order against Burt, alleging physical abuse and threats.) Anthony claims his father then tried to hit him, but he escaped to his father's bedroom. Anthony … [Read more...] about What Happened to the House of Horrors at the Center of Netflix’s ‘I Just Killed My Dad’ Documentary?
This Very Un-Florida Spot Has Some of Florida’s Best Beaches
This is the latest in our series on underrated destinations, It's Still a Big World . Flanked by two well-known destinations in the Florida Panhandle—Destin to the west and Panama City Beach to the east—South Walton is easy to miss if you’re not aware of the unique beauty hiding just off of US Highway 98. Luckily, I knew exactly where to go when my fiancé and I veered slightly south from the main motorway. Venturing down Scenic Highway 30A, we landed in Rosemary Beach, one of 16 towns along the Gulf Coast that make up South Walton. “We’re older than this town,” I said incredulously as I looked at the sign welcoming us to what would be our home for the next few days. Established in 1995, Rosemary Beach is not even the youngest in South Walton, but it is a perfect example of the planning that went into developing this area into the idyllic beachfront escape that it is today. Cobblestoned streets, brick-paved sidewalks, fire-powered street lamps, and buildings that look … [Read more...] about This Very Un-Florida Spot Has Some of Florida’s Best Beaches
Salman Rushdie Stabbed in the Neck on Stage in New York
Salman Rushdie was stabbed in the neck by a man who rushed the stage as the British-Indian author was about to speak at an event in western New York on Thursday morning, according to law enforcement and witnesses. The attack happened as Rushdie was about to address the Chautauqua Institution , a nonprofit education center and summer resort near Buffalo, for a talk on the U.S. being an “asylum for writers and other artists in exile.” Rushdie was taken by helicopter to a hospital ; while his condition is unclear, one witness told The Daily Beast that her husband saw Rushdie “able to walk with assistance” after the ambush. Rushdie’s work, particularly his 1988 novel The Satanic Verses , has attracted fierce protests, death threats, and even a fatwa for his assassination by the former religious leader of Iran, who accused Rushdie of blasphemy. A $4 million bounty on his head remains active to this day. A witness, Ward Pautler, told The Daily Beast that Rushdie “had just … [Read more...] about Salman Rushdie Stabbed in the Neck on Stage in New York
